And most importantly, they're not only being allowed but encouraged and organized by school staff. I'll believe a student protest is genuine when it's something the school is scrambling to suppress.

Yup. The last student protest I witnessed happening in a nearby neighborhood that I believed was genuine was one prompted by the school district's decision to censor student speech (by banning some relatively benign T-shirt IIRC), and students in a few schools sacked up and said "oh yeah? So we don't have rights at all if we're in school anymore? Well fuck you, guess we won't be attending anymore."
