Renting definitely works for some people. Others like not being semi-permanently attached to a physical location.

I also think a ton of energy is spent in hiding the options people have for owning their own land. It is made to seem too cumbersome, risky and expensive to even bother researching. I don't discount that it's gotten harder to own a home either. It definitely has and we as a nation need to address it. But it is not impossible, even today.

When we acquired Mexico north of the Rio grande, the Mexicans we inherited were mostly white. then during most of our history most immigration was from northern Mexico which is higher in whiteness (sometimes even a majority European genetics).

You can buy a house for under $100k in 2026 too. People in the past had to do more with less. They didn't spend 50+ dollars every day on fast food and starbucks, didn't have it delivered to their doors, etc. Life was significantly less convenient back then.

People today are just as capable of buying houses. They mostly choose to spend their money on dumb things they consider "essential" but that aren't. You can buy kit houses on Amazon today just like you could back then.
