If you're carrying a little tool bag like that, like the set of Craftsman socket wrenches you can buy at a hardware store these days, you can't even compare yourself to someone with a truck. You have no right to call anyone driving a truck a "poser" or whatever slur you want. And if a plumber or electrician rode up in a scooter with his tools in his backpack, I'd probably tell him that he's not needed.

Transit lovers have no idea how expensive HSR is. Normal Japanese people don't commute on the Shinkansen because it's way too expensive to use everyday.
The Shinkansen was like 200 usd when I went. Cool experience, but in comparison, my plane ticket to Japan across the entire Pacific was only 600 usd.

I mean, if the job only requires a small set of tools he could get away with it. But if he was a professional he'd be woefully unprepared if anything bigger happens.

Ditto. I'd assume he's on meth, and fire him fearing he'd strip my home's pipes or electrical wires for their value in copper.

I should point out this reply:

What is a good post, then? When I go to the Reddit, of the top 25 "Hot" posts, two are stickies, at least six are angry rants, at least 12 are memes designed to provoke rage, one is someone's video, one link to a news site, and a few discussion threads. There is nothing helpful, interesting, informative, or true here.

I came across this rather interestingly-named restaurant in New Orleans (source) and I started wondering why they don't talk about New Orleans more. As far as the core of the city goes, it is basically an authentic European city plopped into the North American continent with narrow, automobile-antagonistic streets. It even has streetcars!

There are a few theories I have as to why this is the case.

1. Echo chamber retardation. Most likely option. Their favorite YouTubers don't talk about it, so they don't know about it. What, you expected to explore cities on Google Earth independently?
2. Suburban growth patterns. Like the city of New York, New Orleans has no real space to grow and all development must replace other development. In the 1980s and 1990s, the eastern part of New Orleans grew with big suburban-style shopping centers and fast food restaurants. Most of these are a bombed-out wasteland now (the ruins from Katrina still stand, even over 20 years later) but they still grew that way.
3. Secretly racist. The New Orleans population is still 53% black, despite dropping in recent years (white and Hispanic, mostly).
4. Area bias. Most of these types don't like America, and they ESPECIALLY don't like the South, not just red states or fighting for the Confederacy, but anywhere in the South because they're newer cities, from Arizona to Florida.

Many pop-urbanists and other pop-experts seem to have this near religious/quasi-secular hatred of the South if they're talking about America's problems. They will endlessly spew bile and hatred about the South being this backwards and awful place through my terrible experiences conversing with several kinds of these people in real life.

It's like this acceptable secular version of Hell where all the misfortune and bad ideas spring forth from. They'll giddily claim that their city or states public transit and urban planning is terrible, but that's because 'the South did it first!' or that apparently the evil racism of the North was only made manifest because of Jim Crow transmuting its way north like some pre-modern 5G wave. Is there something wrong with America? It's probably from the South! It's weird they'll gloat about winning the Civil War (since they're usually Northerners) but then they'll become Jefferson Davis's most ardent supporters because if only the South was excised from the US then it'd be this progressive and forward utopia.

Couple years ago I went there for a work conference. 'bout ten at night I was setting things up in my room and I heard this incredible buzzing. Looked outside and there it was, 12 floors down and a couple streets over... A whole pack of blacks on ATVs just swarming downtown. I've seen takeovers and stuff before but this was different, just gave me this deep down 'this city is gone' feeling.

It's just too much of a corrupt shithole. Atlanta is proportionally about as black, also a southern city and very much a carbrained non walkable one and I guarantee most urbanists would choose to live there instead if those were the only two options.

To be fair, that implies New Orleans was ever there in the first place for it to be 'gone' now.
