I generally feel that anyone that can embody the ideals of the founders of this nation should be able to call themselves an American. The idea of American as an "ethnicity" is rather retarded however.

That's a point without a purpose. None of the ethnic groups that came in post Ellis Island embody that ideal. The Ellis Islanders only started to post WW2, and they were still White Christians.

I'm a mix of English, French, and German ethnically speaking.

But I've never been to any of these countries. And which one would I consider myself "more" of in terms of loyalty? What does it mean to be ethnically something when as an American all my ties are to places far removed and me and my ancestors have built and contributed to somewhere else for hundreds and hundreds of years?

My family traces back before Independence.

Absolutely at this point white American should just be considered an ethnicity. It's only not because it's easier to take from us when it isn't.
