You guys know the story of the Melians? Also known more commonly as the Melian dialogue?
So its mid pelopenssian war, thats the war between sparta and athens for the entire known world (most of the Agean sea)

Anyway Athens decides the need the independent island of melos to launch an invasion sparta, the islanders are all like "we got no beef, by what right do you wage wr on us" and the athenian response is one of the coldest lines in history, the final line is likely somthing you have heard before.
