Sumiranger Z is a real life Japanese tokusatsu hero protecting his neighborhood from trash while finding fulfillment through community service.

Primarily located in Shibuya, Sumiranger has been working to keep the streets clean for going on 8 years and what began as a small project to fight his own mental health battles has grown into a small movement.

Nerd culture is at its best when it’s helping people become their best selves. We’ve seen this in action recently with the man inspired by Himmel the Hero from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End who stopped a knife attack [archive] [mega].

But the lack of drama or live or die stakes doesn’t make Sumiranger’s work any less meaningful. Small problems can quickly become big problems. In one post Sumiranger laments how he saw someone flick a smoldering cigarette butt into a pile of burnable trash (Japanese trash collection distinguishes between burnable and non-burnable trash).

As for his difficulties with depression, a quick look at his social media [archive] [nitter] shows that Sumiranger has become a community fixture, volunteering for events, playing with local kids, and promoting small businesses.

Keep up the good work Sumiranger Z!

I wish American nerds would do cool shit like dress up like a gay superhero to clean up trash and improve their community, instead of trooning out and gooning to clown fart porn all day

There is nothing stopping you from painting yourself blue and assembling a team of Planeteers!

It's silly but more power to him. He's doing something, helping his community, and gets to wear a goofy costume while he does it.

Think I remember this guy. In order to complete his sidequest, you have to find 10 pieces of garbage strewn about the Kamurocho district and then win a game of shogi against his rival, the Trashcan Trollop.

I appreciate a nice, heartwarming story. Don't know what that cosplay is from, but good on this guy.

Have you not heard about all the stories of guys dressing up like superheroes and visiting dying children in hospitals?

If by trash you mean criminals, then cities like New York is long due for a batman. Isn't gotham city NY?

Masked ICE Agents dragging liberal White women across concrete are a decent alternative for now.

iirc the correct term for them is "local hero" and there's a SHITLOAD of them
some are just like, the local town's mascot, others are anti-smoking, others are just sort of a regular toku hero with local color, like Floridaman would deploy in his Golf Cart Of Justice accompanied by his wisecracking talking alligator mascot, and, I dunno. throw citrus grenades shaped like fruit
this movie has like, a hundred +

For those confused as to how a famously well kept place like Japan could need this sort of thing, Shibuya is notorious for being full of shitty teenagers and middle aged narcissists. The whole area is one gigantic monument to consumerism.

It used to be kind of cool in the 90s and early 2000s before fast fashion and disposable culture really took off, but now it's pretty much where assholes go to rack up credit card debt. Tourists are always the least respectful of their surrounding area, and inter-ward tourists are no exception.

I hope he gets his anime ending and ends up turning trash-can girl to the side of good with his love for cleanliness.

i thought the Japs were super conscientious and the streets of Japan were always sparkling clean.
They are for the most part. The hoards of foreigners they let in are not.
