It's an extension of the waifu culture of the early 2000s, except instead of drawing fan art of their self-insert OC together with Sanic or whoever their waifu is, they got attached to a mentally ill woman's OC.

Where did this develop? Was it one of those things endemic to Japan which other countries imported or just badly translated?

Pure speculation on my part but: Possibly it was just a by-product of YouTube and streaming emerging. Before 2014 4chan only did images and gifs, that may have been a factor too?

It's really sad because the term originally came from prostitution. I get some of these kinds of vtubers are basically digital prostitutes, what's upsetting to me about it is the realization some people are so fucking lonely they're literally settling for the bare minimum human connection and referring to it as a girlfriend experience.

I don't know if it started there, but iirc the gatcha kancolle sold wedding rings and marriage certificates for their boat girls. Then vtubers, notably Hololive's Rushia/Mikeneko carried on that practice. Between that and the ASMR, I think would be the two of the bigger factors of the parasocial descent.
I'd mention vidrel for fun, but given that they shifted markets to fitness trainers on cruise lines, you can demonstratively show it wasn't as bad of a hellscape back then.

  • The vtuber stuff came up & was popularized by both KizunaAI & the rise of Live2D
  • Because of how much it would cost at the time it was mostly a company thing hiring professionals to act as virtual idols, Which spawned from 60's pop culture blending with preexisting japanese theaters like Takarazuka Revue.
Nowadays vtubing isn't as expensive to get into as it use to be. You can buy premade models that are very customizable or even find free ones before you start paying for a custom one.

I believe romance anime, particularly saccharine waifu slop, is a close relative VTuber GFE which provided a good bit of inertia in the form of a bunch of people already on board with the idea of simulating the feelings of a relationship with an anime girl and dwell in a group of like-minded people simulating the same feelings with the same anime girl.
