NEW YORK (AP) — “Heated Rivalry” is scoring big with hockey romance fans.Since its Thanksgiving weekend debut, the steamy television adaptation of Rachel Reid’s 2019 novel has dominated social media feeds and inspired a growing fanbase devoted to the queer romance at its center.

you need to watch the movie again, that's not true. the rock was on a path to earth way before the government knew about it, and couldn't be warned because the rock hit a fucking spaceship's communications antenna (i will never understand why advanced humanity never makes ships capable of moving in fucking 3D). the bugs send an actual second meteor, but this time humanity has already set up defenses for this sort of attack. the bugs DO have space travel in the movies, that's how they colonized other worlds. klendathu isn't their homeworld. klendathu is their homeworld in the movie, but it's revealed after the first assault that they've colonized the entire system. it was also the humans who started the war. the mormons knew the world was inhabited (in the movie, this is shown in a blink and you'll miss it newspaper, because verhoven loves diegetic storytelling.) and still put down roots. they were slaughtered, which the government used as anti-bug unity propaganda, and then the bugs actually attacked earth. you can tell it wasn't a false flag because they intercept and destroy the second meteor with a newly constructed (but not ever claimed to be new TECH) moon defense system, which was where they detected the previous rock, even in the movie.

they used plasma launchers like they do to hit the ships in orbit, in the asteroid belt of klendathu.

I am a firm believer in bombing the fuck out of anyone, anywhere that so much as side eyes us. I'm fine with drone strikes on drug cartel from mexico to columbia, completely agreed on all that.

So why then am I posting this news? Well it has now been confirmed by the Spanish government to be carrying a feeder type nuclear reactors. A feeder reactor creates weapons grade materials from used fuel cells, it's a strict verboten type of technology to transfer to less advanced nations obviously. the movie even goes so far as the crew pinpointing that the rock is on a trajectory FROM Klendathu TO Earth.

the book even explains more about this. the first contact humanity had was a bug scout pod sent to mars. the bugs all died because mars didn't have an atmosphere, and humans traced its path to klendathu. they sent a scout team to klendathu, and all the scouts except a couple were brutally murdered, so they established that that area of space was the Arachnid Quarantine Zone. mormons then ignored the warning, and began to attempt a colony at Port Joe Smith, on klendathu.

prior to this, the federation government KNEW that the bugs would be hostile, because they had several skirmishes in outposts in the same region, but they kept them hidden from the public to prevent panic. the idea that buenos aires is a false flag is neat but not supported by the materials. all materials, from the original book to the movie to even the modern video games, portray that the mormons were the ones who caused the bugs to become aggressive, and the meteorite strike from klendathu was a surprise to humanity. the book also goes into how the bugs had a relationship with the skinnies. the arachnids in the book are portrayed as technologically equal to humanity, with a different idea about how to handle problems.

unironically in the book it's described that the bugs have a caste system similar to jeets or chinks, and they use the hivemind to prioritize the highest levels of the caste's safety and survival. they have lasers and spaceships, just like humanity, even in the movie.
