The ones in the western world originated from Summer Palace lootings and were bred by westerners. Don't blame China for this dumb shit. If you look at pugs not even 100 years ago vs today, their deformities are markedly less numerous. Normal legs, taller, (allowing them to properly move and self groom) faces nowhere near as flat, etc. It cannot be overstated how horrific modern dog breed standards and desired traits are, along with how rapidly they’ve worsened, not only for pugs.

A modern example happening right now is the European Maltese, a very healthy dog because the breed is so old inbreeding hasn’t been as big an issue historically vs the trendy Korean or ‘teacup’ (flattened face, tiny from unethical breeding, skull too small for its eyes) Maltese. It’s an interesting look at the banal evil of people who would call themselves dog lovers. They’re also retarded. Enter Kayla buying a pug puppy.

From as far back as ancient China, they were solely bred for the purpose of being companion animals. The pug never had a duty, never had a history or protecting or hunting, and the closest thing to a job they had was that some were trained to carry the emperor’s robes as he walked.

People like to mock the breed for their appearance and their breathing problems, both are valid, but pugs are genuinely the wonderful dogs that want nothing more than to be loved by their owners. Too good of a dog for Rekeita
