Even if it wasn't this is beyond, BEYOND retarded for an indie developer award show. Indie devs literally have the most to gain from using AI for development. It opens a million doors for the gaps in the developers weaknesses, allowing them to make a product to their vision while on a budget. But won't somebody please think of the artists???

My theory on the AI bubble bursting is that it won't happen until the end of 2028. Why? Because Trump is in office and providing an excellent low-regulation environment, meaning almost zero federal AI regulation outside of a pornographic deepfakes bill, he's attempted to squash state AI laws (success to be determined), and he's allowing through big mergers and acquisitions.

A President Vance succeeding President Trump could continue the gravy train. A Democratic President would be highly likely to end the good times for Big Tech. But either way, this is a critical window in which the industry can get a lot done with a guarantee of less red tape. So even if it's destined to crash and burn, it could take another 3 years.

Ignoring how colossally dumb this decision is, they based it off a quote from a (Google Translated) interview from literal months ago that happened to go viral on Twitter this week in the wake of the Larian Studios backlash. And it was already known that there were AI placeholder assets in the game because people on social media spotted them shortly after the game released, and Sandfall patched them out.

I would respect this decision slightly more if they had stood on business and not nominated it in the first place, but this reeks of a publicity stunt and/or attempt to cash in on the growing backlash against this game after its Game Awards sweep.

Anyways, came across this video in my recs. Authored by a prominent AI-seether, the video talks about a twitter argument between former animation storyboarder and insane sperg "John F. Fountain" and an AI bro named SirSpamsALot. Fountain's daughter decided to make art and John showed it to the twitter world. For a 10 year old, this looks ASTOUNDING. Near perfect linework, puts the art I made pre-2020 to shame.

However, unbeknownst to Fountain, an EEEEEEVIL AI bro would concoct a sinister plan to ruin his daughter's drawing FOREVER. Yes, with the power of NanoBanana, SirSpamsALot would feed Gypsy's art into the orphan crushing machine and... digitize it with some accompanying poses.

Don't know why SirSpams had to mention it had to take less than 10 seconds to generate the picture. But it doesn't matter, because HE STOLE AN ARTWORK FROM A CHILD!!!! HE STOLE IT PEOPLE. THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO RAPE! According to Friendly Neighborhood Artist, the art "couldn't stay on model" (?) even though aside from the eyes, the other 3 panels look just fine. But alas, this matters not, even community notes is against our Sir.
As usual, Fountain and the rest of the "rational, hecking good human artists" take to BURN this heathen at the stake!

What does this SirSpams guy have to say in his defense? Well, he does stand his ground I'll give him that. He's clearly in it for the love of the game. He understands that these AI bros are just bitter and that he accepts that AI is the future. Did he have to pick on a 10 year old drawing to do it? Probably not. This means that he didn't actually intend to steal the image at all (not like he could, because these artists do not comprehend the definition of "stealing"). And lets take what he said to heart. "Make new poses," and "add color". Obviously, he's not saying to let AI do ALL the work, but he acknowledges some tips & ideas you can add to your art to diversify the art. It sure is good advice, I'll iterate again, that AI in fact is a great friend to have in the creative process. When you're stuck on an idea, just run whatever you make in an LLM and it can show you the way.
But no, according to these people, AI artists need to DIE and be PISSED ON!
However, part of me is starting to think that this guy is just a bait account, because there's no way one can effortlessly felt so many mentally ill people, quote tweet after quote tweet.

I have two theories.

(1) Part of the training process for AI is getting humans to rate outputs from models in progress, and this is a job that some people in Africa do (archive). As the linked article will remind you, remote employing an African at a competitive salary for their third-world country is basically slavery and an insult to the dignity of the holy negroid, and it's easy to broken telephone this sentiment into "AI is black slavery."

(2) Every so often you see people arguing against establishing human societies on other planets on that grounds that it is colonialism and colonialism is bad. Applying the same "logic", having an AI servant who tirelessly does stuff you ask it to is slavery and slavery is bad. These people are fundamentally against any kind of human progress and will argue that all funding for higher endeavours should be redirected to subsidising the underclasses.

The timing of this suggests that it was going to sweep their awards too, and they are using this as a pretext to not give it any more awards. The anti-AI rationale is stupid of course but as a business decision it seems way better for the health of the ecosystem to spotlight other games that need help finding bigger audiences. Maybe the rule is if you win certain categories at the VGA you get disqualified from the indies. Or you do the indie awards first like how the indie film awards precede the Oscar voting season.
