What is a tomahawk missile? thats like the sub sonic American version of the German ww2 v1 buzz bomb? God I hope we don;t use them still if true!
Tomahawks have been upgraded a lot over the years, everything from the body and wing shape to the sensor/comms package and warhead got changed. The only thing the current versions don't do is nuclear warheads or air and undersea targets, it's become the most versatile and generic missile in that type. There's even a version designed to disable power stations non-explosively using long strips of carbon fillament.

The way Uncle Sam turns me upside down every year and shakes till his 'Hawk money falls out of my pockets is fucking cringe. I wish I could be proud of the marvelous American engineering without being constantly haunted by that reality, but at least that's not dramatically contributing to regular folks being further kiked out of real money by launching mountains of it at brown folks.

Damn a monster box is a tomahawk missile! Learn something new every day! How many tomahawks you got left?
2 and i am going to off load it after ther first of the year for tax reasons
I just noticed @Fascist Kirk doesn't have his pink triangle any more. Congrats on the removal of the mark! (i was going to DM this, but the forum wouldn't let me)
I am like the turd you cannot flush, that and I am sock less after reading the Terms of service

I only remember them from Desert storm, great against sheep herders, and terrorists (Wink Wink) not very helpful in a modern war between super powers or second rate powers.

This isn't the thread to continue this discussion in detail, but I question how you came to that conclusion and not the opposite; Tomahawks did very well in Desert Storm against what was one of the largest and most powerful militaries at the time and they're now a basic option for that sort of mission, but uselessly collect dust when there isn't an actual military to bully.

Thread tax, my humble little pouch of fractional gold. Does anyone have any prefered way to store these pieces? I have settled on nudging them around in the sleeves, stacking them so each piece can be seen through the plastic at once, and then rubber-banding them together.

I've heard the opposite;

It's almost impossible to get a source on the 500 oz number, everyone is quoting each other. I found a Kitco forum thread where someone posted a retraction.

Even if the monster box number is right, a few million ounces of silver over 40 years is nothing. We mine eight hundred million ounces a year.

Whatever is spiking the price, it's not the military. I don't think it's AI either, that's another rumor that smells like bullshit.
If the solid state battery hype is real Samsung, Toyota, and many other big names are going to by using 100 million ounces at year by 2030, it could will be over 200 million ounces, that just for solid state battery for cars. It seem, they have started to build the factories for these batteries. The first factories will be on line next year. They are planning to start marketing to the masses in 2028. No one, how big the need for silver for these new batteries will be in 10 years. It could be bigger then all the mined silver right now. Just one product, could eat the whole pie.

the solid state battery hype is (god willing) gonna be like fusion where it's perpetually "only a few years away from bringing us all to da science promised land11!11!1!". just far too good to be true for its intended purposes and would disrupt a whole lotta shit if it did exist like what you mention with the metals

I would have said, it was just like fusion, just 6 mouths or a year ago. Now, if they are building the factories, then it mean it is real, and game changing.

Samsung SDI is a leader, using Ag-C in their SSBs targeting mass production around 2027, with pilot lines and samples already distributed. Other key players like Factorial Energy, QuantumScape, and BYD are advancing SSB tech with different approaches, but Samsung's silver-carbon method for stable lithium plating is a significant innovation being scaled for future EV batteries, impacting silver demand.

How economical and game-changing will silver batteries be if silver is $200/oz though? Was that ever factored into those calculations?

I suspect the price of silver will be the limiting factor in the supple of these battery. Although, if these batteries live up to the hype, the price can go up a lot, before these manufacturers will even blink.

I tell myself I'm not going to run my credit card up for the month and then I turn around and bid on, and win, a bunch of Ebay live auctions. Including for a silver round I don't even want and am probably going to sell as soon as I get it.

Oh well, at least I get gold and silver, plus cash back on the card.

In 2025, approximately 7 to 9 ounces of silver are mined for every 1 ounce of gold.
This ratio reflects the physical volume of newly extracted metals, which differs significantly from the financial gold-to-silver price ratio of roughly 86:1 to 92:1 seen throughout 2025.

2025 Global Mining Data
  • Total Silver Production: Estimated at 813 to 844 million ounces (Moz).
  • Total Gold Production: Estimated at 88.6 million ounces (approx. 3,694 tonnes).
  • Mining Source: Only about 28% of silver comes from primary silver mines. The remaining 72% is produced as a byproduct of other mining operations, including gold and base metals like copper, lead, and zinc.

Comparison with Historical Ratios
While the 2025 mining ratio is roughly 7:1 to 9:1, historical and geological averages provide broader context:
  • Historical Mined Ratio: Over all of human history, the ratio is estimated at 8.8:1.
  • Geological Abundance: Silver is roughly 19 times more abundant in the Earth's crust than gold, though it is not always found in concentrations that are economically viable to mine at the same rate.
According to google AL deep dive.
