A man ate at the same Florida restaurant every day for a decade. When he stopped showing up, the chef went looking for him.

Pensacola, Florida — At the Shrimp Basket restaurant in Pensacola, Florida, one customer has been a constant presence. For lunch, he always orders a cup of gumbo, light on the rice, and asks to hold the cracker.

He also puts the same order in again for dinner. Charlie Hicks, 78, has had the same standing order, every day, twice a day, for 10 years.

Shrimp Basket chef Donell Stallworth says you could set your clock by Hicks.

"Mr. Hicks don't miss no days," Stallworth told CBS News. "We open the doors up, Mr. Hicks is there to greet us."

Hicks was omnipresent at the Shrimp Basket until September, when he suddenly didn't show up for several days.

"I knew, then, something was wrong," Stallworth said.

Fearing the worst, Stallworth left work in the middle of his shift and drove to Hicks' apartment. He knocked on the door repeatedly but got no answer.

"And right when I was going to turn, I heard something, a voice, just like, 'Help,'" Stallworth said. "And then I opened the door up. He was laying on the ground, and I didn't know what his condition was, that was the scariest part right there."

It was unclear how long Hicks had been lying there; it may have been a few days. He was severely dehydrated and had two broken ribs. But thanks to Stallworth, he would survive. And thanks to the staff at the Shrimp Basket, he would never be alone again.

They started by bringing his gumbo to the hospital. Then they went out and helped find him a new apartment, right next to the restaurant, so the employees could always keep a watchful eye.

They even got Hicks new appliances and fixed up his new place.

They did all that work so that this week, three months after his accident, Hicks could pick up his routine right where he left off.

"I'm glad to have you back buddy," Stallworth told him when Hicks entered the Shrimp Basket for the first time in months.

He sat back down at his favorite table and ordered his favorite dish. Nothing had changed except their bond.

"We made a connection," Hicks told CBS News. "We made a connection."

Stallworth said having Hicks now living right next door "is the best thing going."

"He's that uncle," Stallworth said. "He's that grandfather. He's that best friend. He's all in one."

Well now I wanna try this gumbo.
Autistic like regularity so I assume this must be the most consistent gumbo on a day to day basis.
I too am intrigued to try it and having what sounds like a big friendly black man make it makes it sound like it must be fucking awesome.

For the first time ever, Uncle Joe's Flying Corps is flying a meritorious mission.

Everyone's going on this one, including me. Bob, please warm up the helicopter, you're flying left seat, understand you have a great scenic route plotted. Milton, please fly right seat. Will, Yuri, and Kwang Hui, please assist Jerry, the crew chief in taking the coolers with the soft drinks to the helicopter after we finish the barbecue luncheon. The rest of us will assist Jerry and show our honored guests around the bird, point out areas of interest, and see to their comfort.

We all hope we can fly more meritorious missions in the future.

I live alone and I worry a lot about slipping in the shower or something and cracking my head open and nobody coming to find me. Guess I gotta become a regular patron of an establishment.

They also must have had some kind of friendship outside of just the business/customer dynamic beforehand as well. When I worked in the food industry we had regulars who I might be concerned about if they didn't come in for a while, but I would have had absolutely no idea where they lived or how to check up on them.

I confirmed via the link that yes, the chef is black. Not all blacks are niggers, it's just unfortunate that most of them are. When TND finally happens I hope this man has a pass.

That chef is a good man and I can't blame him for being worried, I fucked off for just a week for a vacation and had people questioning what happened when I came back. The staff must really love this guy to not only go check on him but also set him up with a closer apartment just to keep a safer eye on him.

He shows up twice a day every day, doesn't bother anyone, and probably tips pretty good. Its in their own self-interest to ensure he is looked after.

Nah, old people are just like this. Particularly if they are actually retired and have no real family around. The ritual makes them feel like things are OK and they find a lot of comfort in it. Sad though that a resturant had to figure all of this out and save him rather than his own family or friends.

I was going to say something racist when I read "Mr. Hicks don't miss no days," but I can't bring myself to do it this time.
I mean, the dude is called Donell, he's not going to be white. But Donell's alright, I'm not even going to Sadie Enward.

Man gumbo is delicious but every day for years? Jeez man.
I can appreciate a man who knows what he likes.

Finally a palette cleanser, A&N has been pretty bleak lately.
Lately? I have needed a thick skin to trawl these waters since I joined the Farms.

Not all blacks are niggers, and not all niggers are black. A few decades ago, the ratio of blacks that were not niggers was larger and trending upwards. But a bunch of shit changed and reversed that trend. Now there are barely any blacks that are not niggers, to the point that it feels weird when a black person acts in a civilized manner that does not gel with our expectations (LOW) for them.
Very sad but true. I blame a lot of this on corposcum pushing gangsta rap and "thug life" hard starting in the 90's just so they could make some $$$ on the Next New Thing(tm). Not only do you see barely any blacks that are not niggers now but so many white kids have been taught to act like niggers too. FFS we really need a cultural reset.

Anyway, this was a sweet story and it made my night. Thank you, OP and thank you, Donell..
