The new cast of the sequel to Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” has been revealed.
According to Variety, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Jesus Christ. Ohtonen previously appeared in Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom.” Ohtonen will replace Jim Caviezel.

“The Resurrection of the Christ” will be released in two parts. The first film is set to be released on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, with the second installment set for release on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.

Gibson has for years teased a followup to the 2004 box office hit, and Caviezel has expressed his readiness to return to the role of Jesus. In 2023, Caviezel indicated that he was in regular contact with Gibson regarding the progress of the script and said that the movie would “be the biggest film in history.”

However, it was reported last week that the film would move forward with an entirely new cast.
An anonymous source told Page Six that the reasons for recasting are the cost associated with digitally de-aging actors to compensate for the two-decade lapse between the “The Passion of the Christ” and its sequel, which are set days apart from one another, as well as scheduling issues.
Regarding the amount of time that has passed since the release of “The Passion of the Christ” relative to its sequel, Gibson has expressed that writing a script has been no small feat.
In May, Gibson said, “It took me about eight years to write the script for the sequel, if we can call that ‘The Resurrection of Christ,’ because it’s a very complex and almost impossible to understand subject.”

“It was a very difficult thing to find and synthesize, because you have to understand, firstly, why it had to happen. And to understand something like that, you have to think, like, why is mankind so important in this process,” he said. “Why are the big realms of good and evil slugging it out for the hearts, minds, and souls of mankind?”

In addition to casting Ohtonen, the sequel film has cast Mariela Garriga (“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”) to replace Monica Bellucci in the role of Mary Magdalene, and Kasia Smutniak (“Domina”) will replace Maia Morgenstern as Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Pier Luigi Pasino will portray the Apostle Peter. Riccardo Scamarcio will play Pontius Pilate. Both are Italian actors.
According to Variety, shooting for the sequel films began in Rome last week.

Forgive me for being cliche, but Passion really was moving, I think it's genuinely beautiful. Not sure why they can't use Jim again, though I suppose everyone is 20+ years older. If I don't have my own setup by then, I swear it will be the last movie I go see in a theater as modern hollyjew as a whole has proven itself to be far worse than the pharisees. I'm wondering if they are keeping Beloved John the same, as I liked the subtlety in his performance reacting to Christ's tribulations. It's gonna be weird if they replace everybody.

>not a dark brown Muslim who looks like the conquering tribe that permanently fucked up the Middle East a few hundred years ago

This is gonna piss off all the right people. Godspeed, you complete lunatic.

Muslims fuming because they literally can't film their religion, even though they'd love to shoot some Aisha scenes.

Jews also fuming, separately.

Atheists also fuming.

Canonically it makes more sense to cast a different actor as Jesus since the Bible says that his disciples didn't recognize him after he came back.

How the fuck is it a two parter. I hate how everything Hollywood needs to be two parts.

I don't need two 3 hour films of Jesus back from the dead.

Releasing it so far after the passion (which I really did like despite originally seeing it in grade school at probably younger than was appropriate, thanks Catholic school) is also weird.

I guess if we do The Resurrection and then, like, Pentecost: The Film that'd make some sense.

Hollywood is currently experiencing creative bankruptcy, and that why everything is a sequel, prequel, or extended universe of some sort.

Sure, but not everything needs to be Part 1 and Part 2.

They managed to make whole ass LOTR books 1 movie each and then The Hobbit had to be 3.

Less is more, you can tell the Resurrection in a single 2 hour block, maybe 3 if you want to be autistic. You don't need a 6 hour two parter.

There's not really any kind of midpoint to split the films at either? Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be two hour and a half movies we can slot together into a three hour single film for home release.
