Although it is ultimately a performance albeit a pretty shitty and slightly sadistic one, there's definitely something to be said about the roles these people play vs the person behind the mask. To his wife kids and immediate family he will be remembered as Ethan, to people who don't understand the troll and the greater Internet at large he will be immortalized as ole 43 the guy who threatened Marty with a BB gun, and let a retarded deformed pedophile get away with attempting to cheat on him with his wife and then proceeded to play the role of said pedophiles best friend and frequent collaborator for over a year afterwards.Hope people take this moment to reflect on what exactly they get out of all this at the end of the day. Hindsight is 20/20, but given the circumstances I'm sure Ethan would have spent the time he had left with his wife instead of entertaining the goblin.
I guess it's the same thing for Marty, people are always going to remember Marty the master troll who beat Chance up over Nick the gambling and drug addict middle aged looser black sheep of his family who spent the later years of his life manipulating retards on the Internet for an audience he couldn't stand to fund his degenerate lifestyle.
It kinda reminds me of something I remember reading back in highschool. The author Hunter S Thompson hated the only book he was ever known for Fear and loathing in las Vegas. The book by and large was mainly fictitious bullshit written to be entertaining because in reality he and his friend just spent a weekend getting trashed in casinos and not covering the motor sports event they were sent there to report on which is a pretty boring and pathetic story. So he created this colorful alter ego Raoul Duke who went to Vegas to cover a a motor cross event and ended up taking a psychedelic "savage journey to the black heart of the American dream." Well the book was successful and people assumed it was pretty much autobiographical and that he and Duke were essentially the same person. This haunted him for the rest of his life and he used to regularly get incredibly angry and frustrated because he felt people were coming to see Duke instead of him when he would go to universities to give lectures or go to book signing events.
I bring this up because ultimately he was correct, he is remembered today as pretty much being Duke and well, not the shitty pretentious abusive lazy and frankly kind of lame person he was in reality. And ultimately these guys suffer the same fate.
I honestly don't what is worse, being remembered by those close to you as the deeply flawed and mediocre person you were so they just selectively remember the good times and pretend the rest never happened, or being remembered by everyone else as basically an exaggerated cartoon villain you portrayed daily online.
