A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

again he's going for the "brat summer" crowd, those who only get their political insight from social media, he's a tiktok darling but if the last American election shows anything pandering to gay guys and bicurious teenagers on the internet doesn't transfer to electoral victory.

He'll scrape some seats in the next election but I think it'll be similar to reform at the last election, they did well in the polls but only ended up with 5 seats
 
Just a side story, but we're about to get bummed by a geomagnetic storm and coronal mass ejection from the sun.

There are two scales S1-4 and K1-9 - higher numbers are worse. This one is going to be a S3/S4 - Severe3-4 and a K8. From what I read on the BBC, shit will be effected but don't worry it's not that bad, they say, then they mention the Carrington Event was on par with this one.

That and the area I am in got battered with tropical rains and winds earlier, checked on the news and weather, nothing. I mean this was a proper downpour. Streets turned to rivers level shit and nada, zip on the news. The weather says we should have gentle breezes as the moment as hurricane gusts intermittently bend the trees 90 degrees.

Burnham is a snake and he’s hated by the PLP. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were different factions trying to take him out of the leadership equation.

He’s Labour’s best chance, but they’re retarded enough to sabotage themselves with endless infighting.

He could be a problem for Farage in the north though. There’s plenty of retards who call themselves socialists despite being further right than Pinochet, who think socialism means a magic wand that makes the NHS run whilst only other people pay taxes, who will vote for him just because just because he’s Norf FC.

They see an overly groomed Cambridge graduate in Armani suits that someone else paid for and think “he likes football and has an accent, he’s working class like me!”

The run up to the next election will be determined by retards and retardation.

I mean,given said Cambridge graduate is going to scrap the 2 child limit for benefits, then he's going to make himself extremely popular.

Do any of us on here work? Or live within our means? Congratulations, we can all go back to funding absolute spastics and retards to sit on the dole, shoving out as many kids as they want and given the serious increase in non Brits who are now allowed to claim benefits? I've worked hard and saved (remarkably well given over covid I was on furlough pay, at £198.57 a week + whatever meagre benefits I was entitled to. No debt, substantial amount in savings) but I've taken out income protection insurance and am genuinely considering taking a massive chunk out the savings and keeping a mix of gold and cash for if shit goes down).

It's not like I get anything. My dental and medical is all private and my council tax is basically over £1000 to have my bins emptied.

Labour rewards the skivers and hammers the strivers.

I suspect scrapping 2 child cap is coming in the budget. It's a concession to the lefter end of the party, a spit in the eye of every working human, "an attempt to end child poverty" and a major carrot for their most loyal voting base, the never want to be employed.

Any attempts to revert the removal of the cap will be red meat to Labour for generations as they scream, "they're taking food away from children."

I was on benefits last year. The cash is woeful but the non cash benefits were surprisingly good. A bus pass, a grant for household items (think fridge freezer and a washing machine as mine were knackered) several hundred pounds of energy vouchers and cash for clothes for interviews plus a discretionary payment for a haircut (my job centre advisor offered and said I should do something to lift my mood. Must have worked cos I got the job).

Were I in same position again I wouldn't care if it was cash or vouchers so long as the end result was the same. Perhaps we need a system like EBT/SNAP like they have in the USA. If your kids are hungry who cares how they get fed as long as they do.

If possible join the trades.
On a uk average wage you qualify for free college night classes.
That can get you plumbing, plastering or domestic sparky work which can all be done 80% off the books.
Take cash, take crypto, get business by doing a good job and being recommended because of it.
 
The NHS is going to lay off 18,000 staff and give them redundancy to the tune of £1 billion.

That's nice of them to pay off the nurses...oh wait, it's managerial and admin staff lol.

I think we are at the point now where we need to have a serious discussion as a country about places where children and young people and the vulnerable are housed and how they are a magnet for predators. It seems like every single borstal, boarding school etc was rife with this.
Note how this guy was the catering lead, he was a fairly low level person in the hierarchy. That says to me that he was allowed to do this by people higher up. The article hints at this by talking about ‘a posh house’ where boys were taken to be abused as well. Whose house was it?
Note too the pathetic sentences these men got
Johnston convicted and sentenced to nine months in jail for two counts of indecent assault in 1990. He died in 2007 before Operation Seabrook began.
Christopher Onslow, John McGee, Alan Bramley, Kevin Blakeley and Brian Johnson Greenwell were jailed for a total of 18 months in 2019 for abusing young men at Medomsley.
Alexander Flavell was found guilty of indecent assault of young detainee as well as misconduct in a public office in 2023.
And note that yet again, there were allegations against him from previous jobs yet he was allowed to continue.
We have a serious problem in this country and it goes all the way up. Countless lives ruined, predators allowed to operate with impunity

Can't reply to @BongoMongo but yeah I get what you're typing. You go out to work 5 days a week, to be stuck in a building with people you can't thoroughly dislike and get paid barely anything for the privilege.
The working man is lucky to get a holiday when you aren't being overcharged for everything from food, energy, water and rent / mortgage meanwhile the terminally unemployed but able bodied are forever subsidized. It's all so tiresome.

Those prison sentences are an absolute insult to the victims. So many men involved too, sounds like they had a right little perverts club going on. So we can assume they all knew, colluded with one another to abuse children and to evade authority.

Just the abuse should’ve landed the perpetrators years in prison, and the group nature of it should’ve meant even more. Barely any child abuse, or prosecutions for sexual assault or rape of adults, are getting through to trial stage in the U.K., and when they do the prison sentences are barely even a slap on the wrist. There needs to be a complete rethink of the way the justice system deals with sexual crimes, because as it stands none of this is a deterrent at all.

Places with vulnerable children are absolute honeytraps to weirdos and perverts. It’s obvious whatever background checks are supposed to be done aren’t working. What gives these perves the confidence to go ahead and do the awful things they do towards kids? Abusers knowing they more than likely won’t get caught certainly isn’t helping to keep kids safe.

Not to mention the cost this has on the system. I don’t just mean the legal system, but kids that are sexually abused typically go on to have higher rates of physical and mental problems that need support, sometimes for very long periods of time. They might not be able to work once they hit adulthood, so you’re now paying benefits to people you wouldn’t have had to, if they hadn’t been abused. Addictions and aggression or self-harm are more common in sexual abuse victims, which again is more cost to the country for treatment and support (or police and prison). Blokes who sexually abuse kids are fucking up those kids for the rest of their lives, making those kids’ lives much harder for them than they needed to be. And all these sickos got was a few months in prison for doing so.

Successive governments seem to want to focus on cutting costs before they do anything else. Well, there’s a great way to save the country money in the long term, as well as saving the lives and happiness of so many children - make child sexual abuse an automatic life imprisonment. Guys who plan and groom and abuse kids don’t get better, neither with treatment or with prison. The only way to deal with them is to take them out of society. And, it’s cheaper to do so too.

Unless there’s some reason why those making the laws would be unwilling to promote such strict rules around protecting children from predators. 🤔

Unions will also bend over backwards to protect those accused of sex crimes against children, likely because it's their 'job to protect the workers' and it overrides any sort of duty to give a fuck about kids, because if they don't look like they are standing up for their members, who would join a union? or whatever the logic is. The system is totally rotten
