Never heard of it being a dedicated unit, it's usually one or two days dedicated to the Holocaust. The books are an English thing, not a history thing.

For my kids there was an entire unit dedicated to Holocaust literature in 8th grade and 10th grade each, in addition to what gets taught during history class. I don't know how it is in every single state, but even still but I'd wager 8/10 literate kids in the US (as in, excluding nogs) know who Anne Frank is from having to read either excerpts or the entire thing in class.
