She spent most of the last 3 yrs in Kuwait, which has an abundance of fast food restaurants. She spent the last 3-4 months in Syria.

I think it's the opposite, she'll use Julia to stay in contact with Salah and occasionally send him payments for cat food etc... Chantal will use the cat to keep some sort of tether to Salah.
