I don't think power, social or otherwise, is a major motivating factor for most ftm or mtf.

Looking at how today's tomboys have become casualties of the pooner epidemic, I think a lot of it is indeed driven by trans-grooming on social media as well as parents who are being told to keep an eye on their kids to look for signs that they are "trans" and then they push this as well. Parents are also constantly being inundated with the idea that they should "support" their "trans" kids and most parents want their children to be happy as misguided as helping them troon/poon-out is.

The classic "goth" girls that were around when I was in high school during the late-90s/early-2000s are also being ravaged by the pooner disease. Many of them did suffer from depression and social anxiety, but instead of wearing all black and drawing the blinds in their room and listening to the Smiths or Joy Division while writing bad poetry, they take testosterone and wear binders thinking that this will help them escape from their insecurities instead. Plus, pooning-out for girls has also become a sign of broadcasting your "edginess" to people, so now it is considered part of selling your brand of how much of a "nonconformist" you are.

Maybe but not really. Some, but certainly not all.

From parental testimonies we know that there are plenty of ROGD pooners who never were gender non conforming tomboys before they suddenly announced that they were trans. They were typical girly girls on their way to typical young womanhoods. And post their adoption of a male gender identity (and in spite of it) we've seen that some pooners are still very conventionally feminine in their attire, behavior and aptitudes. They're not really tomboys. They're deranged females who are convinced that they were born in the wrong bodies. (Or deranged females who think they'd live better lives presenting themselves as "men".) IOW, they're pooners.
