To be fair, the media blitz in support of the five assholes was huge at the time. Trump wanted them dead and so it was as much an Anti-Trump thing as anything else. You have to dig a bit to get at the actual facts and that Netflix movie poisoned the fucking well. I think the Central Park case was a watershed moment for when the visceral initial reaction to a 'Black Man rapes White Woman' case shifted from 'Believe all women and HANG THAT NIGGA NOW!' to 'Well have you considered that he dindu nuffin because the racist system is framing him and maybe she was asking for it'? It's an important foundational part of the modern progressive black crime narrative.
