I have to ask, is Joji actually any good anyways? Bascally all I know is "He used to be filthy frank and now he's popular" but I have never really sat down and listened to an album he made. I did once catch Run on the radio and got surprised to hear a pop song use a time signature other than 4/4 and snapped to attention, but then outside of rhythm, the song itself is still just your average overproduced 4 chord pop with not much going on musically (guitar riff was cool, I guess). I also just cant stand the singing style and the way he writes melodies, it just reeks of generic. But to his credit, singles tend to be more simplistic and commercial: So were the other songs on the album any good?

Why do you need us to form an opinion for you? This is literally what simple ian does. Go give Joji a listen and form your own opinion.

He makes dull mumble rap. So no, it's shit

I'm not a fan. At all. But George decided he wanted to be Joji and not Frank anymore and that was his decision and I bore him absolutely no ill will. Even though I really don't like what he's doing now, I don't have to.

Ian also decided he wanted to be a new iDubbbz and not the old iDubbbz and that was his decision and I bore him absolutely no ill will. Then he got upset that people weren't lining up to celebrate his transformation and started attacking his old fans and acting holier than thou and I thought, "what a loser," and moved on. But then he joined in on one of the most despicable harassment campaigns I've ever seen against his own friend who stuck his neck out for him and I decided he was completely irredeemable garbage.

I am not asking for anyone to form an opinion for me. I formed my own opinion of the song Run which I have illustrated. That being that Run, while having some creativity is not enough to entice me to listen to the 53 minute album it is from, as it did not contain enough substance for me to seek out more than what I heard. I just wanted to know what the thoughts were of other people on this who might have spent more time with his music than I did, out of mild curiosity due to how important he is to the subject here.

Keep in mind, I am no classically trained music expert or some RYM-Core head, just a run of the mill "music enjoyer" that has listended to each Joji record 1-2 times max. To me, Joji's stuff is a more alternative RnB version of The Weeknd, moreso akin to his earlier releases like Echoes of Silence, House of Balloons etc. - so chances are, if you enjoyed that stuff, you will like Joji, just don't expect him to be a professional singer. But imho his amateurish/unclean vocal texture lends itself well towards the soundscapes he wants to create. Furthermore I also think he is heavily carried by the instrumentals, but that is a phenomenon that affects around 90% of current (mainstream) music.

Edit: Also, upon casually checking his Spotify, I saw that he has more than 25 million monthly listeners, which is kind of crazy to me, as I assumed he would be in the 1-5 million range, considering his more lo-fi/glitchy/trippy sound. For comparison, Playboi Carti, Gunna and Future all hover between 30-50 million monthly listeners, so him almost being in their echelon of fame seems to attest to the fact that he tapped into something special with his passion, especially after he was basically "inactive" album wise since 2022 and released just a single this year.

Another musician on the 88Rising group that Joji joined at the start of his career (Rich Brian I think) outright admitted that he bought his way in with his parents' money.

Joji already had a loaded father even before he became famous as Filthy Frank, so it's very much probable that he bought his way in the industry thanks to 88Rising as well. 99% of modern ""indie"" musicians are astroturfed anyway so it's not really something out of the ordinary

Not great. But I like the singles. Its nothing really special or jaw dropping but it's not bad

It just sounds like a bunch of mumbling and SoundCloud bullshit.

Not for me, but I can see the appeal to some.
It’s a very distinct almost new genre of music. “Mumble rap” I think it sounds god awful but I can appreciate it’s a unique “type” of music and aesthetic that he’s bringing.

It makes me feel like an old man not “getting” why a younger generation likes this “trash” but then I remember this is like how music trends go and I’m old.

I think his style just has a newer sound and aesthetic that appeals to a younger generation. It just sounds too computerized to me. But kids being raised in the era of computers since birth probably like that idk

Nah it definitely has good melodies and decent (not great) harmonies. He's always had decent melodic sense even back in those pink guy days

Yeah ifaik Rich Brian's parents are some super rich lawyers. Joji's father being rich? Idk where did you get that. Lower middle class at best. Also lmao even if he was rich he wouldn't be helping him out. No idea how is their relationship now but pretty sure during Filthy Frank era he kinda hated him

Don't worry, I think it sounds kinda shit too and I'm 23. Also, I wouldn't really describe it as "music trends" moreso than popular music having been on a quest to sound progressively shittier by the year for the last 80 years. I often just feel revolted when I turn on the radio and hear the degenerate nonsense that the youth is exposed to now. Best I can say is that Joji is relatively tame in that regard, but I dislike the style of production nonetheless when I give tracks like that a listen.

To me, it sounds like the type of music trannies listen to. Shit like sewerslvt and adjacent artists. I can't say I'm a fan.

You do not have to say "sounds like", it just is.

According to Joji’s Wikipedia page, he attended the Canadian Academy until 2012. Their website lists the annual tuition at 3,090,000 yen (about $20,358), plus roughly the same amount for a dorm room. You’d have to be at least a multimillionaire to spend $40,000 a year on your child’s education, his father is definitely rich

He makes well produced sad boy emo music. Bit better than mainstream pop in that regard, but eh. If you're into it, then you're into it.

Joji also went to New York Institute of Technology to study something approximate to Music Production. The tuition now is about 45k a year so either Joji had a scholarship or his parents helped him a lot while Frank was getting popular.

Based on their professions at the time ain't no way his parents paid full price for it. International schools (including the one he went to) give very large tuition discounts (often 50–100%) for faculty children and his since his mom was an elementary and middle school teacher there they definitely used it.

Communication Arts. Idk if his parents were helping him out financially there, probably? but he did have a scholarship for students coming from abroad.

They were definitely not poor and I might've misspoken about lower middle class lol sorry but yeah still definitely not wealthy.

The rumor is that Anisa got too flirty with Max in front of Katt, including grinding on him during a group dance party on the ship and whispering in his ear during a hot tub session while Ian was drunk and passed out. Katt then confronted Anisa privately, but Anisa played victim, saying it was just joking and accused Katt of jealousy over her body. Max backed Katt, telling Ian that Anus was crossing a line but Ian defended Anisa, calling it a misunderstanding.

People also speculate that Anus tried to isolate Katt by whining to the group chat about "mean girl vibes'" during the cruise.
I have such a hard time imagining Anusa being flirty eww but I still choose believe it the last part especially since Anusa was typical nlog back then before she hopped on 'girls girl' train later.

Don't really care about his more serious shit but the "Pink Seasons" album is legit. Despite it being mostly a joke song album you can hear his musical talent shine through. At the start of his 88rising career i thought nobody would've given a shit about his music if he wasn't Filthy Frank but seeing how his current fan base mostly isn't aware of his past as FF i guess i was wrong on that.
