The East Wing apparently was originally built in 1902 (same year as the West Wing) as an entrance for visitors. Then later a few decades later The East Wing was made to be a two-story structure and was added to the White House in 1942 primarily to cover the construction of an underground bunker, now known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. It's something that has existed as long as living memory can recall for most people but at the same time it's not something that was originally built with the White House.
