I haven't read Sanderson yet, but Joe Abercrombie's The First Law series is what Martin wishes he could make. And he's actually able to finish a plot arc. The series could have ended after the first trilogy, it could have ended after the second trilogy, all the standalone books can, well, stand alone, and a third trilogy is on the way. There are a lot of bummer moments but they advance the plot instead of existing to be torture porn, food porn, or porn porn. Martin really does suck, huh?
