I don’t get how these people living off of the government long term (barring disabled people) are able to do so for what seems like forever- aren’t there rules in place to prevent that from happening? I’ve known a couple of people who have gone on stuff like SNAP or unemployment when they were hit by hard times, but they stopped once they got back on their feet. It seems like some people though, especially black people, can be perpetually on the dole. I thought of the people I knew when the announcement came out and feel for anyone out there like them who might actually need a leg up. I wonder what the proportion of honest folks to “government handouts is my job” people is.

Cash for Clunkers absolutely destroyed the concept of the cheap beater car. Pre-2009 you could find almost any 80's-90's cars in semi decent shape for $2-3k. My first car in HS was a early 90's land yacht with 140k miles and I managed to buy that car for under 2k with money I made at my shitty after school job. Was cheap AF to insure and meh on MPG, but getting a car was really one of the few reason I put up with the retail job. Between HS kids not being able to get even those crap entry jobs and being priced way out of any cars, its no surprise that the younger generations are all checked out from wanting to put work in. I know there is more to it than that, but you really can't hate the Obama administration enough.
