That was my point -- the only meaningful deterrent to home invasions (or ambushes as you describe) is shooting back. The law is irrelevant -- the state will do as it pleases, so literally the only thing protecting you (or anyone else, legal or not, and whether the cops have a legit warrant or not) is that little nagging fear in the back of the invaders' minds -- "I might be dead in three minutes if I actually go through with this." Right or wrong, fear of "self-defense" should be enough to make a cop think twice, or even three times, before attempting to execute the state's "ultimate authority."
That's a really hard lesson to get through to some people. It was especially hard to get through to my mother as my dad and I were first getting her used to firearms. Your weapon is your final protector. Not your loved ones, not your government, not strangers. Paper (warrants, laws requiring warrants, case law punishing cops for breaking in without warrants, etc.) cannot not stop a home invasion or a bullet. Your gun is all that can forcibly put an end to it. Consequences be damned, that prick beating down your door is destined for the morgue, not his comfy bed that night.
You cannot rely on
anyone to protect you 100% besides the gun in your hand if shit really hits the fan. Even if father and son are both there with you, both armed, both pissed at the invader and both ready to fire, there's no perfect assurance we'll be able to stop an attacker before he gets to you. We'll fucking try, and it'll be noisy enough to soil some underwear, but you're the final arbiter of your safety.
You can argue the ethics and morals of it all day and night, but it doesn't change the composition of "the moment of truth" -- you are in your home, someone (doesn't matter who) is trying to break in and clearly intends you harm. The only thing that will physically stop a home invader is gunfire, and ergo the only real deterrent is the invader's fear of it. And it doesn't matter how tough those SWAT larpers are, or how "prepared" they think they are, the moment one of their buddies goes limp and drops to the floor, that bravado vanishes. Of course, "revenge-fueled bloodlust" often replaces it, but that's why you (hopefully) keep more than one loaded magazine with your weapon.
All the lawfare garbage is for the survivors. And even if you wind up going to prison for life, there's still some satisfaction in telling the court (i.e. the state) to its face "you shouldn't have invaded my home, it's a shame not more of your goons died."
