Yeah but they were always that way. And what they're doing now is actually pretty common in capitalism (where life serves capital; different from market economics where capital serves life) right now: forget growth and sustainability, and just charge whoever remains for what they're worth.

It's a double edged sword that one, since while working as a commission artist full time can theoretically provide a steady income, it's all too easy to underestimate one's workflow and wind up with long wait times and/or unhappy commissioners. Popfurs can make announcements of when they're accepting commissions and attach essentially whatever price people are willing to pay. I will agree prices have increased considerably over the past few years.

Don't even get me started on "adoptions", which are functionally identical to NFTs in value: the "right" to use a JPEG. They're the second worst case of value being exclusively found in social status signaling, behind "popufur" (artist with updoots on MSG, or a Discord cult following) drawings. There are more than enough Furries to sell out any event so eventually Furries will stop worrying about specially catering to the silly demands of the Troons and feature their events in the way they originally planned. Troons may still attend but as soon as they cause trouble to ruin the enjoyment of tbe event for anyone else they will be kicked out. If they whine about being kicked out they will only cause the rest of the Furries who actually enjoy the events to socially distance themselves more from the Troons. The Fandom will split into two Fandoms the Straight plus LGB one and then the Troons plus every other degenerate Pedo/MAP, Zoophile/Beastiality creeps.

Not exactly true you are more paying for the right to use the character in other art. It has more value than NFTs imo.
Yeah, adoptables are essentially paying for character design. It could be a legitimate service for people who aren't particularly creative. That said, it also does get absurd sometimes when the designs are unremarkable, overpriced, and more about who is selling them than the actual product.
