Neither country would do well in a full separation at this point. But we should be making it top priority to remove our dependency on them. Unfortunately, it seems most corporations are just hoping to ride out 4 years of Trump then start business as usual again.
Right now we're in a situation where the U.S. could, but won't, decouple with China within Trump's term. China, on the other hand, is probably somewhere between 5-10 years from being able to decouple from the U.S. If the U.S. decouples from China before it's ready, China collapses and goes into another century long warring states period. If China reaches independence from the U.S. economy, it's going to crush the U.S. into the dirt. It's literally an us or them situation, but no one in corporate power wants to see it that way (or is paid off). It doesn't have to be a zero sum game, but China's mentality makes it one, and it's unlikely to change.
