Mildly off topic, but I was taught a long time ago that sympathy meant feeling bad for somebody and empathy meant feeling bad for somebody because you had gone through what they're going through.

Most people would be sympathetic to a parent who lost a child, for example, but few could be empathetic in that situation because they haven't experienced it themselves and therefore can't fully imagine what the person is feeling.

I found out later this is apparently wrong and I only have a vague idea of what the words mean and how they differ.

It's pretty simple to understand what's going on.

Anisa picks up all of her political and social opinions from breadtubers and Hasan. But she's not really smart or worldly enough to understand why they have those opinions (that is, the basis of their opinions—I'm not saying Hasan truly cares about Saudi money or influence). The breadtube basis of hating Saudi Arabia is that the Saudis have waged war against the Houthis for years. Because Hasan and co. are pro-Houthi terrorist, they therefore hate the Saudis, who have been bombing the Houthis and contributing to a proxy war in Yemen. Anisa does not understand this or even really know about the geopolitics of the region, so the only thing she picks up is "Saudi bad." Ian gets all of his opinions from Anisa, so he definitely has no idea why he's supposed to hate Saudia Arabia.

Ian is just the last link in this human centipede version of geopolitical commentary, so it's not really surprising that he says these things without basing them off any knowledge, thought, or principles.
