What I'm getting from this tournament is that KF really likes guys who dress in flowing, all black outfits and talk weird.

Talk?

It's always very weird that people like you just assume everyone agrees with your dumb reality and they put black people in media to humiliate you or out of fear. We just think you're special needs
You should swing by the Sweet Baby Inc thread some time. You'll find plenty of people utterly convinced (and equally outraged) that black people or women being in games at all is part of the woke agenda to...actually they never get as far as explaining what it's supposed to accomplish.

ETA: Not that I expect it'll placate some of you retards, but I wasn't saying everyone in that thread is like this, just the ones who can't distinguish between a girlboss ebony kween lecturing the white devil on privilege and a character in a game who happens to be a black woman.

To destroy the White Race... c'mon this is beginner stuff

I thought I'd try my hand at this best games ever made thing. Thought I'd throw in my hat. I tend not to value novelty as much as others. Something I think that causes people to overvalue Nintendo and Immersive Sims. I'm a big fan of games that iterate to an ideal form. I think a lot of genres stagnate due to this reason.

Platformers seem hurt by an unwillingness to push the limits of their players. I think this is because of brain dead takes like SMB World 1-1 is some kind of profound game design. So now all games shouldn't climb past the difficulty of a tutorial level. This effects the design of games in the genre both 2D and 3D. What's the point of all the control given in Mario Odyssey if you're not pushed to use it until the final level of the whole experience?

ImSim games were hurt mid iteration. Deus Ex, in my opinion, is beloved for the promise it gave for the genre. It was clunky even on release. And I think that it's the most beloved game its fans don't actually play. I even see comments on lets plays of people bragging that they watch the game more than they play it. The conspiracy stuff in the game is cool, I guess. Though it's delivered often as wordy exposition. Not elegant at all. No, I think this genre was destroyed when focus switched to the console. It would be like if Capcom were cut off in 1989 and instead dumbed their games down for console players.

Anyway, here's my top 15.

1. SimCity 2000 (Maxis, 1993)

Classy, refined, and masterfully designed. This is the simulation game as art. Scratch that. It is the game as art. Iterates on its predecessor while maintaining the series character. Not as childish as SimCity 3000. Not as clunky as SimCity 4. And not as pants shitting retarded as SimCity (2013). The term “auteur” gets bandied about a lot. Will Wright deserves that title. There is a sense of design artistry that he brought to his projects that can be felt. His games felt premium and adult(back when adults still existed). This unique feel remained a core aspect of Maxis until 2009. That’s when the wheels fell off.

2. Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi (2003) (Cave)

CAVE had as close to a perfect run as developer not named Capcom as you’re going to get. In my opinion CAVE perfected SHMUP. Though I’m not a huge fan of Raizing’s Battle Garrega for all the reasons people seem to love it. STGs share a benefit with some other genres (Beat Em Ups, Character Action games, Simulation, etc.) of intense iteration. Combine this with fans of SHMUPs being extreme autists and the result is several games in CAVE’s library obtaining a mechanical purity rarely found outside of Tetris. Ketsui is the best danmaku shooter. But really a lot of their games could be placed in this spot.

3. Batsugun (Toaplan, 1993)

The swan song for one of the greatest developer of STG. And perhaps their best game. The bridge between old school SHMUP design and new school. Toaplan really gave it their all with this one. Developing a that is a joy to play. The visuals are sublime. The use of color in its graphic design is a joy to look at. The way the clouds float by on the autoscroll is mesmerizing.

Despite being recorded with outdated sound equipment, the music will get your blood pumping. The difficulty on this one isn’t too extreme for a proto-bullet hell. So it’s a great game to play if you want to get into the genre. I think 1992-1994 has an argument for the greatest period in video game history.

4. The Punisher (Capcom, 1993)

One of the most forward thinking video games ever made. Invented the I-frame roll that is all the rage today. But, unlike Dark Souls, The Punisher doesn’t fall apart in the second half and it actually makes sense in the context of the game. The roll is used to dodge bullet fire. Something that the developers wanted to solve due to the many bullet firing enemies in the game. The Punisher also makes you feel POWERFUL. You have all the tools to wipe the floor with the endless wave of thugs coming your way. Pure beat em up ecstasy.

5. Alien VS Predator (Capcom, 1994)

The best beat em’ up ever made. This game is the product of the most dense years of iteration comparable only to the SHMUP genre. It also is one of the best looking arcade games ever made. It manages to effortlessly capture the look of 90s Dark Horse comics while also using vibrant, eye popping color. Sadly, this game doesn’t have a proper port. So you’ll have to emulate it if you want to experience it. But if you do you’ll be met with a game that sweeps popular licensed titles like X-Men and The Simpsons Arcade.

6. Super Street Fighter II Turbo (Capcom, 1994)

A timeless classic that managed to balance its mechanics to near perfection. The only fighting game with a super meter that circumvents using its inclusion as a crutch. Meter in SSFII Turbo adds a layer of complexity to its mechanics without becoming the sole focus of the core gameplay. I’ve yet to find another mechanic in a fighting game that isn’t fluff or to appeal to casual players.

7. The Sims 2 (Maxis, 2004)

The end result of Maxis leading the charge during the peak era in computer simulation games that ran from 1989-2004. While there has been many computer simulation games that came out before and after. Nothing has been quite as artistically strong as The Sims 2. Having the perfect blend of personality, humor, depth, and charm. From 2004-2009 the game and its spinoffs/expansions were inescapable. This specific entry in the series managed to hit on something unquantifiable. And each release after seemed to lose a certain amount of that magic.

8. X-COM: UFO Defense (Micropose, 1994)

The most atmospheric game ever made. Playing this game in the dull glow of the monitor on a dark night is the closest a game has come to frightening me. The management and tactical combat gameplay is an addictive mix. The presentation of the menus are inspired. And it expects a lot out of the player. My favorite PC mod ever made is for this game. Something I suggest you use if you play it.

9.. Ninja Gaiden 2 (Team Ninja, 2008 )

The yet surpassed peak of 3D character action games. Anyone who has mastered it knows what a satisfying game this can be to play. Since NG 2 tests your limits to breaking point everything feels earned. None of the interactions in the game feel throw away or like filler. Something I have an issue with in the majority of games in the genre.

10. Thief II: The Metal Age (Looking Glass Studios, 2000)

This game and its predecessor are the closest a developer has come to creating a true 3D stealth game. It delivers on its promises and the gameplay continues to age gracefully. I don’t rank certain PC games as high as some people because they were clunky even on release with many glaring flaws (Deus Ex, Half Life). Thief II far surpasses its peers by delivering on the promise of its genre. And successfully iterating on its formula as a sequel.

11. StarCraft: Brood War (Blizzard, 1998 )

Mops the floor with other RTS. Nothing that has come after has lived up to the example set by this game.

12. Metal Slug 3 (SNK, 2000)

After three games of iteration, SNK hit their peak with Metal Slug 3. Creating the best run and gun game in the process. Puts the Contra series to shame.

13. Aliens (Konami, 1990)

The “kitchen sink” run and gun game. This one does it all. Far better than Konami’s Contra series. Will have you at the edge of your seat.

14. Dai Makaimura

The best game in the greatest platforming series of all time. Despite what you’ve heard the gameplay is fair. And the game isn’t that hard of a 1CC. The visual design is fantastic. The music legendary.

With western game players getting into difficult game design, you’d think these games would get a reappraisal. Sadly, I think SMB World 1-1 brain rot has taken over. The propaganda that video games should have a smooth and gentle difficulty curve has been spread too wide by the Movie Bobs in this world

15. Silent Hill 2 (Konami, 2001)

The only story in video games I’ve found that is worth a damn. Manages to effortlessly pull off decent symbolism, walks a surreal tonal tight rope, is liminal before it became a buzzword, and explores dark sexual themes without being cringe. Doesn’t lean into masturbatory meta as a short cut. Feels like it needs to be presented as a game to properly create the atmosphere the game is attempting. Wandering through the torturous limbo that is Jame’s mind is something that leaves a mark on you. This is before all games became about muh racism or muh tranny/furfag/faggot themes.

Bayonetta (PlatinumGames, 2009)
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (Konami, 1993)

Gran Turismo 4 (Polyphony Digital, 2004)
Final Fight (Capcom, 1989)
Hitman: World of Assassination (IO Interactive, 2023)
OutRun 2 (Sega, 2003)
Outzone (Toaplan, 1990)
R Type: Delta (Irem, 1998 )
Same! Same! Same! [Fire Shark in the West] (Toaplan, 1989)
Viewtiful Joe (Capcom, 2003)

Tetris is built to be replayed a lot more. If that were a significant factor though, minecraft and fortnite should be up here along with every other sandboxslop from the last decade.
I’ve played portal 10x more than I ever played HL (1 & 2), peggle has an addictive loop and I didn’t play it nearly as much as either Portal or HL.

The games you mention have varying levels of replayability but that’s irrelevant as the only thing that makes it fun is the quality of the gameplay loop. Tetris actually fatigues the player the better they get, leading to Tetris burn out.

HL is fun, not as fun as Tetris
Minecraft is fun, not as fun as Tetris
DE is fun, not as fun as Tetris
Tetris when you suck is not as fun as Tetris when you are good… but it keeps you coming back bc it’s just that good.

In all cases, in all realities, TETRIS is superior to every game still in the running right now. Objectively and subjectively the accusations raised against her walls ARE ALL BULLSHIT.

Just because u might be bad at it ain’t my problem :)

A vote for Tetris is a vote against the storyshit/FPS uniparty. The stakes for an election have never been higher: civilization itself is on the line.
Not this "Gayus Sex" shit. Just plain-ass, normal, everyday, no question about it, no politics, no 4chan memes, not “baste and redpilled”, not made to own the libtards, not made to spite Null’s pet lolcow, no G-Man, Augmented Man, Shootan, simple, ordinary, un-embellished, unmistakable, crystal clear, as frank as Frankenstein, as blunt as an atom bomb! One Russian word: It's MOTHERFUCKING, GODDAMNED, SONS-OF-BITCHIN', FUCK-FUCK-FUCKIN', TETRIS!!!

Deus Ex (57 votes) vs. Super Mario 64 (30 votes)
What the FUCK?! This has to be anti-Nintendo spite voting. I hope Metal Gear curb stomps Dis Sux.

The originality crisis is both real and a force of nature. It's barely even possible to produce something truly novel these days. It's all been done, which means it all blends together. Sure, great games still exist, but even they are just previous games but better.
That's fair.

I wouldn't say the highs were higher, but I'd say the lows were less low. You can play Island Dizzy or Bart vs the Space Mutants and still have an ironic kind of fun with them, but I've never been so disappointed in a game as when I saw the globohomo flag complete with No Whites Allowed stripes applied to Aloy's face as an excuse for garish war paint. Say what you will about Fester's Quest, but Uncle Fester never turned to the camera and said "I hate white people and I love to fuck children".
Lmao I agree completely.

It's always very weird that people like you just assume everyone agrees with your dumb reality and they put black people in media to humiliate you or out of fear.
Shut up woke faggot

I just want to say this is the best thread on KF and even if you have shit takes on videogames *cough*castlevaniafags*cough* I'm glad to have been here with you all.
Anyway, if you don't like Deus Ex you're literally a brain dead nigger that doesn't understand how to use a computer and I wonder how you're even able to access this website.

>not including 177
>PC-88 game where the sole objective is to chase down a woman at the park and rape her
>once you catch her you play a minigame where you rape her in real time
>if you fuck her good enough she falls in love and marries you
>the name 177 refers to section 177 of the Japanese penal code which enumerates the punishment for rape
>the game has two endings; you go to jail (bad ending) or you get stuck with a wife you hate (also bad ending)

Do you even like video games?
