Definitely some "i wank myself off to my exquisite taste in movies" titles on that list, i can appreciate that. Have watched about half of that list already.
Yeah maybe but I can't really look at any of them and say wow, this guy's taste blows. Some of those are also my own favorite movies. Bad Lieutenant is definitely worth a watch. In a way, it's a bad movie, and has some of the over the top melodrama typical of Abel Ferrara's direction, but it somehow is a sneaky masterpiece thanks to the brilliant and almost painful to watch performance of Harvey Keitel in one of his best roles. There's this inhuman howl he makes multiple times in the movie that expresses absolute despair and horror in a way words couldn't.
Then there's the underrated Day of the Dead. While I still think the original Dawn is the absolute masterpiece of all zombie films, it's a contrarian choice that I can appreciate.
Similarly, Henry. This isn't so much underrated as criminally ignored. You probably remember its star (Michael Rooker) as Merle from The Walking Dead, where he's almost playing a zombie apocalypse version of Henry. TWD of course wasted so many phenomenal actors (like Lennie James and Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride) and kept you hanging on for the occasional epic performance through episode after episode of complete trash and filler. I'll never forgive that series for wasting so much of my time.
I just noticed The World's Greatest Sinner. I've never seen this, but it was Frank Zappa's first real public outing as a musician (he did the soundtrack). I should probably watch that at some point.
It is definitely the kind of list you'd see from some indiefag film wanker on /tv/ but it's not like these are tard movies a tard would pick.
I definitely enjoyed his commentary on fucked-up books in the fucked-up books thread, his views on horror movies, especially Italian ones, and pessimistic outlook. He could be quite funny. Sorry to hear he was kind of an asshole to numerous people but again, that's why I try to keep a distance here. I like fucked-up opinions from fucked-up people about fucked-up things, and this place has that in spades.
Whatever else he may have been, I think he was a solid net positive to the site and sucks he's gone (or whatever).
