Was Rose 17? We don't know, but we're probably going to find out, based upon legal proceedings. Was Marky 15? Idk, and I don't think we ever will. Quality of evidence has meaning to me, even if it doesn't for you.

I'm cooking up an effortpost in my mind about the nihilistic right rediscovering religion but i'm simply too busy to type it out, so I'll write this in an aphorism instead:

wallowing in nihilism for long enough will make you retreat in the opposite direction out of pure self-preservation, despite not sincerely believing in the direction you're moving toward

there is a nagging gravitational pull toward oblivion that you can never fully escape, but if you push off with enough velocity you're able to stay in orbit for long enough to stave off the inevitable

That's the ethos behind the concept of the "leap of faith". You either find god, or accept the absurdity of existence. In this case, they refuse to continue facing the absurd, either out of exhaustion, or a selfish desire to change their current circumstance without having to put in the effort of rolling the boulder up the hill. So they prostrate to a higher power out of desperation. Their lives need a new meaning, so they look externally because they no longer have the ability to make meaning for themselves. If anything I see it as the polar opposite of devolving into hedonism. You're giving up your ability to create meaning for yourself, in exchange for blind acceptance that something else will create meaning for you.

Even if the act itself was legal in the state, there might be more dirty laundry regarding his sexual proclivities that should be uncovered.
