I have to slightly disagree on that. The shooter could make the shot by buying a couple of boxes of .30-06 easily, but I think the shooter still has to somewhat be trained to zero the rifle, since it was a pretty manky rifle before shooting it
I want to speak to this real fast, I belive "gun guys" VASTLY underestimate how much knowlege they have from growing up AROUND guns that the average person just dosent.
I remember my uncle laughing till he was in tears at my incredibly intelligent grandma who has never held a gun in her life confidently showing us how easy it is to handle, pulled the charging handle back, and accidentally let go halfway, screamed at the loud noise it made, droped the gun, and have the whole wooden stock split right down the middle on the linoleum.
Maybe thats not the best example its just the one that came to mind right away, if you grow up hunting or just target shooting or maybe even just airsoft, you have an appreciate and understanding of how to handle weapons that dosent come from just knowing "how they work"
I think the odds of handing a .30-06, thats a BIG gun with a BIG round, to not an "untrained marksman" those dont exist cause its an oxie moron to someone completely new to shooting and say "hit that plate 200 yards away" ill lay you ten to one even with NO wind and a perfect set up with supports the BEST outcome will be a very bruised shoulder and a very intact plate.
Just the knowledge of how to sight in a scope for 200 yards is a skill that requires practice to know what works and what dosent.
I respect that after only a few months even a very young learner could be able to hit a plate at such ranges, such a statement does not equally apply to someone completly fresh to the concept that has grown up alien to it.
