Most Amish are either self employed farmers or self employed small business owners. Both of which tend to be blood red on the less taxes, less regulations economics. Throw in the old school religion that's really incompatible with the social aspect of the democratic party and it's not hard to see how they could be convinced to vote R. It was more of a problem of getting them to want to vote than.it was who to vote for.
I think that's what's called an "optics check". If..."they" kill an effective and personable campaigner who gets young voters registered, manage to control the narrative and publicly shed a couple people who "went too far", but the rhetoric that radicalizes continues and the NGOs pushing it go under the radar, it's nothing but a win.
