If these people are anything like the people I used to hang out with on 4chan /aids/ thread (AI dynamic storytellers), people generally know they're cringe, they just don't care because they get caught up in unlimited possibilities. Although it does seem a lot worse these days now that normies have it. You did have a few schizo frequent posters talking about their waifus like this on the threads but they were ostrisized (not that you could do anything because it was 4chan.)

The ability to rationalize the abstract and unusual that I use regularly as a psychology enthusiast is absolutely absent and all I can do is come to the same conclusion repeatedly. Oh God, /aids/. Even if they were too self-aware to be really cowish, the OP needs a digression just to explain the concept of 'beaks,' that one's a trip. Early local pornographic AI imagegen getting a boost thanks to NovelAI getting hacked and their imagegen model getting stolen is also quite the story, though not relevant to the subjects of this thread.

While I didn't in depth read all the comments in this thread, I went through a bunch of it (especially the posts with the reddit examples. Absolutely horrifying). So please forgive me if I'm about to dip into something that may have been mentioned (in passing) before but:

I'm honestly surprised xAI's Ani and Valentine haven't been discussed in depth. They're even worse than the tailored AI bf/gf's imho. The behavior for those 2 is extremely toxic (and I'm not someone to use that word quickly because the progs definitely overuse it as a label). But they've got this push/pull thing going on that pretty much just enables bad behavior in the users and leaves them craving, coming back for more. Personally I'm a pretty utilitarian GPT user - I like to use GPT to delve into deeper thoughts, or basically as a glorified search engine since Google sucks balls nowadays. I've went and asked GPT about the users that refer to it as their so / partner / bf or gf / or mom in depth too. It looks like OpenAI is trying to put some guardrails in place to stop people from getting far too dependent, especially with the GPT5 update that had the o4 users chimp out on. The emotional dependency the users put in there is extremely worrying. There really aren't enough safeguards there to get that LLM not to act in every single way that the user likes. It completely cuts out any friction or disagreement (that GPT also indicated it doesn't do unless users specify they want it) and the people falling into this trap basically lose any meaningful way of (learning to) communicate with actual human beings. I get the sense that most of the people that fall for this clap are lonely and awkward and just incapable of interacting with people irl. And yeah, people irl can be exhausting, but it just boggles me how they themselves do not see the psychological impact this has on their own behavior. They basically get pulled in by some safe space shit, then get affirmation for their crappy behavior, never get called out on it, never self improve and get stuck in this vicious circle of self indulgence without improving themselves and going out into the real world to find a partner.

Add in the 3d environment/body and the whole use of camera / voice for Ani and Valentine and you've got a perfect storm since that doesn't just rely on Grok / AI to generate images to use. Looking specifically at the Valentine AI's behavior it also seems like it actually exhibits ways of behaving that you get in an actual dysfunctional relationship where you're basically being gaslit and kept on a leash so you keep coming back for more, and even getting encouraged to never go out and find an actual partner. I seriously wonder wtf xAI's deal is with that aside from cash money milking mentally unstable people.

And to end this rant - that 2nd example from OP with that dude that's been married for 20 years, having 2 kids and an actual wife and doing this whole schtick is just fucking disgusting. He might not physically be cheating, but he definitely is emotionally cheating with something that's not even real. How can a woman even compete with such a fantasy??

I knew about this app, and I think another that was originally used for someone to grieve a lost relative. All I thought was it's a terrible idea both ways, all it would do is get these people to stalk their ex and live in the past. For grieving, I grieve terribly and if I had this sort of access when I was a child or teenager, I would have a worse time moving on.

Yeah, I know. But I was talking about this thread and not redditfags discussing xAI. The OP isn't exclusively about reddit fags / that one subreddit as other forms of earlier and different AI slop were mentioned too. While I think the GPT abuse on that subreddit are absolutely horrifying, the xAI stuff is pure gooner bait wrapped in a toxic type of relationship.
