A majority of Republican voters would support President Donald Trump seeking a constitutionally-prohibited third term, according to new polling from Data for Progress.

The survey of 1,247 likely voters, conducted last week and provided first to Semafor, found 53% of Republicans in favor of Trump running again in 2028. At the same time, Republicans were less likely than Democrats or independents to think that Trump would try to run again — a bid that would violate the 22nd Amendment and its two-term limit.

Fifty-nine percent of Democrats assumed that Trump would “attempt to run for president again,” an idea he has indulged with varying degrees of seriousness since winning reelection last year. The president’s merchandise store sells $50 “Trump 2028″ hats, which he’s also shown off to White House visitors.

“I’m not joking,” Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” this spring, when asked about the third term talk. Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., introduced a constitutional amendment in January that would allow Trump to run again, but would exclude the other living two-term presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Opposition to the idea from Democrats and independents overwhelmed Republican support. Ninety-one percent of Democrats and 77% of independents said that Trump should not try to run again. Eighty-six percent and 77%, respectively, said that presidents should “only be able to serve two terms,” while just 52% of Republicans agreed.

Debatable, considering the older neocons are slowly, but sure, being replaced with younger conservatives more in line with the MAGA agenda. The party has a better future ahead of them than the democrats at this point, which is made up of an old guard desperately clinging to power.
That all is meaningless with them trying to push Vance as the Trump replacement.

Vance is nowhere near as inspirational or based as Trump was.

no, and I don't think you can be speaker either
Unless there's a specific Federal law I'm not aware of? That's not the case. At least not on paper.

Such a scenario isn't addressed one way or the other by the language of the 22nd Amendment (the one that put the term limits in place)

The 25th (Dealing with succession should multiple Executive officers all go down at once) doesn't address it either.

That said? I doubt the Supreme Court, if pressed, would rule any other way than "Anyone who has had their two terms can't have any more, no matter how they might accidentally or purposely find a path to technical eligibility".

The real interesting question if they were forced to rule on it would be: Is a former President barred from being the Speaker or VP completely? Or are they allowed to perform those jobs and simply be "skipped over" if succession came into play?

But whatever they ruled wouldn't have any downstream effects on other offices as relevant caselaw we do have says any attempt to bar anyone but the President from seeking a Federal office as many times as they like would violate the 12th Amendment.

Constitutionally prohibited?

Since when has Trump cared about laws, rules or the constitution?
Always. That's why nazis and their servants tried to shoot him, impeach him, etc.

Trump follows American laws so those who seek to conquer America really dislike him

People floated a third Obama term in 2016 and the powers that be didn't care.

It wasn't prohibited until after FDR died and it was prohibited precisely because he managed to secure 4 terms and was on his way to becoming a pseudo dictator until he died

I think he was referring less to that and more to the fact that FDR's response to being told "no" by SCOTUS was to threaten them into becoming his rubber stamp with his court packing scheme.

How convenient. Typical leftist ladder kicking
It was the Unspoken Rule going all the way back to Badass George Washington himself when he stated ;paraphrasing here; "2 terms of 4 years is more than enough for 1 Man, else our newly established Independence will fall under Kingship and I did not just BEAT an Incompetent King and the World's greatest Military just to bend the knee ."

And would ya look at that, the Dems were the ones who broke that Rule and thus it had to actually be Written Law after FDR.

The real problem is that Trump has had 8, soon to be 12 years to groom a successor and he hasn't. JDalit Vance is not a viable successor.
The fact that we got ONE Trump is an almost impossibly fortuitous event. Expecting a second who is equally independent of the political system is not reasonable.

Theres a massive difference between "some opinions have been written about this" and the president already creating merch about how he wants to wipe his ass with the constitution. Show me where Barry O said he intended to run a third time.

Joe Biden. Obama was the one in office during bidens figurehead era

Trump isn't wiping his ass with the constitution, he's just ignoring the part that doesn't apply

Here ya go. Of course, Obama is "joking" and Trump is not.
