Dharmic religions (buddhism, hinduism, jainism) have one massive problem in that they are mostly about obsessive adherence to religious rituals and helping others is an afterthought. The poor suffer simply because they accumulated bad karma (or their previous reincarnations did) and there is no reason to bother helping them.
This is unfortunately the case at least with regards to modern Hinduism - there exists a common attitude in which all who suffer in this life only due so due to their karma. It is misconstrued so badly that it is said that even giving food to a starving child beggar on the street would be doing more harm than good. They are meant to burn off their bad karma from their past lives by pure suffering, alleviating it would only delay their escape.
Originally the concept was meant to convey the attitude that you should look upon all events in your life good or bad with serenity, for all is the result of past karma. The puranas specifically state that human beings born into the world are always souls that have mixed karma. One's actions in this life determine the next destination.

At the same time, some Buddhism - kind of convergent evolution in religion - wound up being like a reskin of Christianity. Amida Buddha is a lot like Jesus, say the magic words and you’re good to go.
The Buddhist also wants to, as I take it, basically dissolve into reality instead of overcoming it. Buddhist sees the world as an illusion trapping them, the Christian as their version of enlightenment bringing them into a reality that is even more real.
I wouldn't say that it is Buddhism treading upon the philosophical teachings of Catholicism as it predates even primitive Christianity by many centuries. If anything I'd consider it yet more proof of the universal importance of religion, insofar as our belief systems aren't quite as different as they seem.

Earning one's way up the ladder is somewhat of a misnomer, the technical proper concept you're looking for is the 'Wheel of Life' which is meant to depict the endless cycle of deaths & rebirths from the Buddhist lens. We either rise towards the heavenly realms, or fall towards the many hells that await us in punishment. What's important to recognize here is that the entire ontological framework of Buddhism is based on the idea of impermanence.
Nothing is forever, not even your time spent in heaven or hell. There are specific heavens & specific hells gained from different deeds; this is where the breach between Hinduism and Buddhism is the narrowest, for Lord Yama is the judge of the dead in both. So don't worry, if you commit many sins in this life and end up in the hell specific to your transgression you will suffer for only a few kalpas which last only for a few billion years each.
Jodo Shinshu or Pure Land Buddhism developed in Japan is an extremely specific sect which puts an emphasis on chanting the name of the Amida Buddha, that much is true. The point of Pure Land Buddhism isn't necessarily to immediately become enlightened but instead to be reborn as soon as possible into a specific heavenly realm ruled by the Amida Buddha. It is in this land that the adherent to the Pure Land sect will be able to seek enlightenment without any of the distractions of modern day life pulling them this way or the other. Other sects of Buddhism don't necessarily possess an easy mantra meant to serve as a shortcut, but prayers & oblations to the Buddha obviously do happen in all sects.
Also, Buddhists don't see the world as an illusion trapping them. YOU are the illusion, your SELF is the illusion, deluded by the 5 skandhas while swimming in the dark waters of Samsara. The idea that the world is an illusion itself leans more into Vedism or the tradition of Advaita Vedanta. Buddhism is not a reskin of Christianity. I hope this clears things up.
