I think your description is the most accurate I've seen. He seems very experienced in the old establishment statecraft politics to me and he feels like a fish out of water trying to pivot to the memetic political slugfests Trump popularized. To use your example, I guess it's like the manager of a Wendy's all of a sudden needed to make witty posts on Facebook because that's Wendy's social media brand. You don't need to be funny and witty and own the libs to be MAGA, but if you want to poll well among MAGA Republicans, those things certainly help.

I spent six accursed thoroughly unenjoyable months in England and I can tell you gun running wouldn't help. You could have Kier Starmer himself order a brown policeman to break into a white family's home and kill the infant daughter, and if the father then shot the cop, the average person in the streets would say "he shouldn't have had a gun!"
