He did almost win in 2018 (came pretty close) but I think that was probably more of a combination of being a way better candidate than Cruz in terms of campaigning, lots of money (probably some election fuckery, but I think that's been plugged up), and having the "fresh face" advantage to sway moderates (which by 2022 Beto had blown, I don't think he can recreate his 2018 energy). Any win or close margin by whoever runs in Texas will likely be more on the "Republican fucks up" angle than the "Demographic shifts" angle...or at least I hope so.
