I'm fairly certain that this was the literal reason they gave that kid back to him, was because "Oh it's just fag drama, whatever. You know how those fags start fucking young" or whatever

I wouldn't be surprised if they expected something was amiss, but didn't care too much as long as he was scragging fags, just like cops don't try too hard to find the black gang banger that killed two other black gang bangers.

Greer seems more like the retard that the cops trick or beat into confessing to a crime that he didn't commit than the type of person who could plan and carry out the criminal acts himself.

Philip Larkin's 'As Bad as a Mile' always struck me as applicable to Russell. It even has a mangled version of a common phrase* for a title.

The best part of the story is knowing those same cops would never have let Greer get away with that. "Yeah, we'd give that 14 y/o back to Jeffrey Dahmer even after learning about the head and anus wounds, It's not like Dahmer is Russell Greer or anything. That Greer guy is a creeper.
