I've always enjoyed playing Sonic games since I was a kid in the early 2000s, Sonic Heroes and Sonic Advance 3 in particular are certified hood classics for me.

Unfortunately the community surrounding the Sonic franchise makes it hard to enjoy playing the games these days , the Autistic Speed runners, the Troons, the retards that keep pushing for Sonic to be gay etc .

And worst of all is seeing Sega pandering to these freaks, changing the color of their logo to that disgusting rainbow on every pride month, sponsoring pride events, canonizing the characters from those woke IDW comics into the main franchise etc and of course let's not forget that many of the higher ups at Sega are users of Resetera, thus giving an air of legitimacy to those insane asylum.

Sonic CrossWorlds looks like a really fun game that I would definitely enjoy playing, but unfortunately everything surrounding the franchise disgusts me so much that I'm not sure if I can buy that game in good conscious and genuinely enjoy playing the game in this environment.
I've just opted to play fan modded versions of the 2000s games. Love playing the Zero Gravity one. Unleashed has been fun to play with the native PC support. Got a Heroes PC copy that can be modded.

It's quite funny how the 2000s are referred to as the "Dark Ages" when they're the most memorable. The 2010s do not feel that memorable at all to me.

You're absolutely right, the 2000s for me was always the true golden age for Sonic. The 2010s was the real dark age for the franchise. I mean let's just compare the games that came out in each decade .

2000s :

Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Advance 1/2/3
Sonic Battle
Sonic Mega Collection
Sonic Gems Collection
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity
Sonic Rush
Sonic 06
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic Unleashed

2010s :

Sonic Free Riders
Sonic Colors
Sonic & All Starts Racing
Sonic Generations
Sonic Lost Worlds
Sonic & All Starts Racing Transformed
Sonic Boom trilogy
Sonic Mania
Sonic Forces
Team Sonic Racing

The 2000s has 4 Goated games ( Adventure 2, Heroes, Rush and Unleashed ),
Two great collections ( Mega Collection and Gems Collection ),
Five great games in the Advance trilogy and Riders Series,
Three good games in Shadow, Battle and Black Knight
And two mid tier games in 06 and Secret Rings

Meanwhile the 2010s has four great games
( Generations, Mania, All Starts Racing and Transformed )
One good game in Team Sonic Racing,
Three mid tier games in Colors, Lost World and Forces,
Four bad games in the Boom trilogy and Sonic Free Riders.

It's no comparison really, 2000s Sonic wins hands down.

If I may be a bit pedantic, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing isn't even really a Sonic game. It's in the title, it's a Sega crossover where Sonic is just given top billing. If it counts as a Sonic game then we also need to count the Mario & Sonic at the Olympics series.

Also, you forgot Rush Adventure for the 2000. Well, Shuffle, Pinball Party, Rivals 1+2, and Chronicles too, but Rush Adventure should also be the goated category so it's especially missing. Also there was Sonic 4 Ep 1+2 for the 2010s, but I understand wanting to forget about that. But we should remember the DS version of Colors since it's basically Rush 3 and is great. (We can ignore the 3DS versions of Generations and Lost World, they suck.)

This issue was so bland and short that even the most annoying IDW defenders were on Twitter calling it slop a few weeks ago.
You know the situation is dire when even the trannies over at Sonic Retro can't muster the enthusiasm to wank over the latest issue of Sonic-Adjacent Lesbians Crying. The thread has been dead silent for well over a week, and was purely about that DC crossover slop for a while before that.

After reading some reviews of Zebrahead's discography and listening to the main theme and Zebrahead versions of His World, I found it exemplifies why they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Most of Ali's rap sections in ZH's take are just shouted into the mic rapidfire - typical for ZH's style, versus the main theme where it's toned down, slower, and his voice is less scratchy.

It's only minor things at the moment.

- The Sonic Symphony's been called off for 2025 and it's up in the air whether it'll return for future years.
- The main character roster for Sonic Crossworlds have access to extreme gears as well. Unfortunately cosmetics do affect your character's performance.
- Digital Circuit from Shadow the Hedgehog is revealed as a track. The soundtrack for it sounds absolutely nothing like Digital Circuit, it's a completely new arrangement.
- The SXSG collector edition from Limited Run Games, as expected, got delayed.
- SEGA has announced another brand collaboration with McLaren. It's better than the Danica Patrick sponsorship, at least.

Not sure how long you'll last, as the issues get progressively worse*, nevermind the fan sections, where outright mental illness happens.

*Probably the one where the girls go out camping and nothing much happens until the last pages, because GRIL POWER! Until everything is on fire and no-one considers calling Sonic to help. You know, the fastest thing on Earth, lest a guy robs them of the moment, or something.

Well, if everyone insists...

ISSUE 1

Preface:

So after the long running Archie series was put on indefinite hiatus (read: canceled), SEGA ended its partnership with Archie and instead decided to loan out the IP to IDW. IDW is best known for publishing adaptations of 3rd party IPs, though they have lost several publishing rights since acquiring Sonic. Anyhow, much of Archie Sonic’s writing team migrated over to IDW, chief among them Ian Flynn, who also wrote for this issue.

Art:

I am not versed in visual design or art. The most I can claim to have done is creating graphical assets for hoi4 mods. Anyhow, I like IDW Sonic’s art and has stayed pretty consistent throughout. There are no jarring art style shifts to my memory, barring some short stories in the annuals.

Synopsis:

The comic begins by flashing back to Sonic’s previous encounters with Eggman.

First off, the comic assumes the reader has some understanding of game canon. The comic itself is technically a sequel to Sonic Forces interestingly. This makes sense if we look at comics as a supplement to the games, though as a standalone, IDW Sonic has lackluster worldbuilding. This is skipping ahead, but we constantly see callbacks or references to the games, but these are only surface level. I think later, one issue features a city from Sonic Unleashed, but it’s dead and no humans are in sight. If you’ve played Unleashed you’d get the reference, but if you haven’t then all you see is sonic running through a weirdly dead city.

That aside, the plot of the issue is very basic. Sonic is running through hills when he comes across a town in distress. He destroys some badniks, with the help of Tails who’s also coincidentally there. They destroy the badniks, and Tails expresses some concerns to Sonic. Since Eggman has gone missing, the badniks have been left rudderless, but these ones seemed more coordinated. Sonic seems unconcerned and runs off while Tails stays to clean up. The issue ends with an offscreen Eggman watching sonic through a screen and teasing Amy’s appearance in the next issue.

So at most we have four major characters introduced, with two barely at the end. This is not a problem in and of itself, but again the comic assumes you know these characters. If I gave my little cousin this comic, would he have reason to care about these guys?

(“Can Love Hammer It Out” as if there’s any romance in this comic)

To compare, the Archie series introduces almost all its major characters and some of the locations of the world all within the 1st issue.

See, it even tells kids what it’s referencing!

Also there’s jokes and... they’re ok. Archie #1 has it beat in that regard

Final Notes:

Sonic the Hedgehog Issue #1 exists. It’s functional, I will give it that. Perhaps the following issues will make it better in hindsight.

For now, enjoy this image from the letter section
