Atari going tits up only killed the game industry in America, it continued onwards in Europe with games on 8-bit home computers like nothing ever happened. In an alternate universe where America nuked Japan into oblivion and Atari/Nintendo/Sony ceased to exist, there’d still be a video game industry, we’d all just be members of the PC Master Race instead.
I guess there was a very smallish PC gaming market. MS DOS came out in '81, and there were games for that and the Apple computer. Compared to like Atari and Coleco they were a much smaller share in the market. Certainly interesting to think about. No late 80s console wars means no 2000s console wars, so we probably wouldn't have the Xbox either, or we might have got it 5 to 20 years sooner depending on Microsoft who seemed totally unaffected by the crash of '83. Hell, it might have been an IBM / Commodore 'console' war.
