In my HS English class we were taught it's bad grammar, human beings are "men and women", animals are "male and female". That's because male and female are adjectives whereas men and women are nouns, and also it slightly implies that person being referred to is a little less than human.

So it's acceptable to use female to modify a noun e.g. "a female athlete", using female as a noun e.g. "white females" makes you sound like an incel.

But it's one of those things like less vs. fewer (e.g. "there was less beer in the cup" vs. "there were fewer cans of beer in the fridge") that native English speakers mess up a lot and some kinds of people (law enforcement comes to mind) will almost always say "male" or "female" even if it's not the best grammar to say it that way.

Yes, it's difficult, but I think I understand English well even if is not my mother language.
The distinction between sex and gender is common in many languages, even in ancient contexts, such as biblical Hebrew in some cases, for example.
In any case, this doesn't mean that ordinary people don't frequently use the terms "female" and "woman" as synonyms.

Oh, wow! That was a good inference. Congrats! Although it was relatively easy to come to that conclusion. It's funny how others initially thought I was French rather than Québécois, even though I had already mentioned on my profile that I was American. It took them a while.

And actually yes, "dog" and "canine" mean different things. But they are interchangeable in everyday common language, just like "female" and "woman."

My least favorite is when people overcorrect and use "woman" as an adjective. "Woman lawyer" sounds like a caveman. "Woman doctor" sounds like a caveman or like someone forgot the term "gynecologist."

It’s possible that she absent-mindedly opened it thinking it was hers, I’d bet a gazillion dollars she’s paying all of the bills, so it’s not like she’d be on the lookout for a private letter just for him. It’s also possible they have similar names, so at a quick glance, she thought it was hers. Alice/Alex or some shit.
