Israel may have been a lynchpin of US strategy to oppose Soviet influence in the Middle East, but with the USSR having fallen thirty years ago, lots of people are starting to ask what that relationship gives us. Without US adventurism against the Muslim world at Israel’s behest we likely would not have seen 9/11 and its disastrous blood-in-the-sandpit outcomes.
We always supported Israel for domestic political reasons; it wasn't really for countering the Soviets, which might have been better accomplished by making friends of Arabs, not enemies.
Here's a fun memo from Nixon to his Secretary of State on the subject. Of course he insists that his policy was never guided by domestic interests (doth protest too much), but otherwise admits that much mid east policy is contrary to our foreign policy goals.
