On a final note, there's something I really like about Japanese artists tackling superhero themes, such as Tiger and Bunny, One Punch Man or even My Hero Academia. Can you guys recommend some similarly good superhero manga\anime?

Those are pretty rare in anime there was the Ninja Turtle OVA that basically turned them into some kind of superheroes, but don't bother with it, so the only other one I can think of is To Be Hero. Although honestly, what came to mind first thing was Ninja Slayer From Animation, which is a parody of American ninja movies and ultraviolent anime, but I suggest watching Inferno Cop first before checking that one out.

Thank you both for the reccommendations, I'll be sure to check them out!

I'm really liking AoT season 2 so far. It might not be an intellectual juggernaut with deep, complex themes, but it's still every bit as exciting and occasionally terrifying as the first season. The music is still awesome, production values are high and the characters are still likable enough. It's also one of the rare cases where I prefer the anime adaptation over the manga. To me, the manga just feels too much like a draft for the animated series rather than an actual graphic novel that was meant to be enjoyed. In the Anime everything is so much more expressive.
It already started? Shit, I'm a slowpoke.

Not a problem. Oh, I almost forgot about Samurai Flamenco, and there's an OVA series called 8man After that's also superhero-related. It's a gritty reboot of an old 60s TV series you can't find the entirety of online, but the OVA's there if you're interested.

I randomly checked TV Tropes under the superhero page to see what's listed under there, and some are listed that I never really thought, let alone think are superhero-related (lol Evangelion, Cardcaptor Sakura), but there you go.

To be fair, they did take their sweet time making it (as well as waiting for Isayama to produce enough content to animate), so you'd be forgiven for not sitting at your toes waiting for it to air at last.

Oh yeah, I really should check out Samurai Flamenco as well, thanks! I remember liking Hakaima Sadamitsu a lot as well for its over-the-top, testosterone-filled awesomeness, even though it's more of a tokusatsu\tatsunoko style show than a superhero one.

Huh, it is interesting they'd categorize Cardcaptor Sakura as superhero stuff. Then again, one could say most magical girl stuff is basically about costumed crimefighters, so I guess it makes sense.

EDIT: Egads, I've double posted! What a shamefur display!

I can see Cutey Honey counting for the superhero genre, and Powerpuff Girls Z makes sense, too, but the other magical girl shows listed doesn't exactly fit outside of the Sailor V manga. Those since you mentioned them being like costumed crimefighters... alright, I could see that, but the magical girl warrior shows make more sense to list than something like Cardcaptor Sakura and Madoka Magica if you ask me. *shrugs*

Oh yeah, Guyver counts as superhero, too. A twisted take on it, but it fits. Surprised Apocalypse Zero's not listed.

Yeah, now that you mention it, stuff like Magic Knight Rayearth really is more of a fantasy tale than a cape one. I really dig Guyver's design! His tokusatsu stuff isn't half bad as well, though I'm a filthy casual when it comes to that genre.

Yeah, thought about Magic Knight Rayearth potentially counting as superhero, but then I thought, "Nah, they're more like knights". But I think it would be interesting to see a magical girl genre actually take on the superhero genre.

Haven't really gotten into tokusatsu, but it really is a sweet design. When I went to a con last year, I actually saw (and took a picture of) a Guyver cosplayer, it was really fucking cool, the guy got the costume down to a "T". Was probably the best cosplay I saw there next to a Buckethead cosplay.

Speaking of which, while I might have a morbid sense of humor, I've always thought it'd be sweet if Garth Ennis did a gritty, deconstructive parody of magical girl, similarly to what he did to cape comics with The Pro. It probably wouldn't be something for the faint of heart though...

Ah, good ol' Buckethead! One of the more unique shredder, that's for sure.

Since we're talking superhero stuff, which manga is it that Stan Lee helped create?

That was Heroman and this manga, Ultimo, whatever that's about.

Also apparently he's the original creator of whatever this is, THE REFLECTION, which comes out this summer. I think thanks to 12-episode shows by Madhouse like X-Men, Wolverine, and Blade, guess superhero anime's starting to become popular. That, or the Japanese animation industry is finally realizing they need to pay better attention to the foreign market or something.

And in the 70s, there was a Spider-Man manga that, from what I remember reading in the book 500 Manga Heroes & Villains, had a lot of symbolism and violence, so it's like the first dark incarnation of Spider-Man or something. Also it wasn't Peter Parker as the main character, it was Yuu Komori. If I could find it, I'd probably read it.

While so far I love pretty much everything I've seen by Madhouse, I wasn't crazy about their Marvel stuff. The biggest offender is probably their Wolverine series. At least their X-Men and Blade stuff looked consistently good all the way, but not only were the hairy Canucklehead's solo adventures weak on the plot, they seemed to have ran out of budget by the end of it, resulting in an episode that was full of still images for fight scenes. Too bad.

Schierke and Farnese have just already explored Casca's mind. I already expect a lot of gruesome shit to follow afterwards. This is for those who are into Berserk.
HOLY SHIT, I totally forgot about Berserk! Thanks for the reminder. Here's to hope Miura won't go on a year-long hiatus after five chapters...

I'll keep that in mind when I get around to watching it. I'm not big on the comic books at all, my dad could probably tell me if there was anything wrong with the X-Men anime if he were to watch it. (I actually didn't mind the X-Men anime because of that, I thought it was good. I also thought the Batman: Gotham Knight anthology was great, too, so I'm not the best person to judge this lol.)

X-Men was definately the best of the bunch. I think Madhouse also made an Iron Man Anime, but I can't remember how good it was. Batman: Gotham Knight was indeed great, I have a soft spot for stories involving unreliable narrators.

Speaking of Batman, I also dig Jiro Kuwata's manga of him, it's some nice, pulpy fun. I think it was released in the US as Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga a couple years ago.

So apparently there was a trailer dropped for that Pokémon movie that's going to do a retelling of Ash first getting Pikachu and their first adventure....only instead of Misty and Brock, it's now these two.

They had Rica Matsumoto record a new version of the original OP too (you can hear it at the end of the trailer).

I also started watching Burst Angel, an 2004 series I've never heard of. It look great even 12 years later, and I'm always a sucker for high-octane action eye candy with a fish-out-of-water protagonist. So far I'm liking it quite a bit.

Holy shit, I just remembered I bought the first two DVDs over a decade ago and I still haven't watched the second one. I don't even know if I still have it. I did like the first DVD, so I don't know why I forgot to watch the second one.
