russell has long been paying for one of those “reputation defender” services (i forget whether it was a facebook post or a plightsperg in a court case or what where he was complaining about how he had to use one, it was forever ago) to only show things he believes are positive about him when you google his name. when i found those minutes from that city council meeting somewhere in nevada many months ago, i REALLY had to dig. most people just doing a cursory google search will only see the things he thinks are fine to be seen about him. they AREN’T fine, of course, but they’re the “least worst” (in his mind).

I think it has to be related to competence. If you're an incompetent plumber, joiner, bricklayer, electrician, etc. you won't last a day on the job. Somebody will figure out that you can't do the work and you'll be paid off at the end of the day and told not to come back.

Offices are full of incompetent people pretending they're doing something meaningful. A lot of the time, their supervisor is just as incompetent as they are, so you might have a whole bunch of people colluding to conceal the incompetence.

I used to think this was just the public sector (because that's where most of my experience is and most people who work there are incompetent or lazy or both.) But my son runs his own office-based business and he can't hire competent people for love nor money. They can often talk a good game, but after a few weeks on the job it tends to become pretty clear that they don't think it matters at all whether they actually do any work.

Fast food joints and supermarkets will work you until you drop. So if you don't have any actual skills, an office is where you want to be hiding.

That may have more to do with Google removing the Farms from search results almost entirely for a while. Most of those services are just looking to scam idiots like Russ out of their money. That's pathetic. When I was in grade school every year we had a physical fitness evaluation that involved doing pushups, hanging from a bar, and other various exercises. One of the other tests was a mile run. The kids that didn't care or take it seriously who would just fast walk instead of actually running would finish in about 15 minutes.

It's even worse than that. Often times they make more work for other people to give the illusion of actually doing something. Carl Icahn, an American investor, has a famous story about a business he acquired that had an entire office of 50 or so people and no one at the company knew what any of them actually did. He hired some external consultants that couldn't figure out what any of them actually did either. He fired all of them and it had no impact on the rest of the business and no one had any problems due to them being gone.

It might be due to his time as a paralegal - compared to the low skilled jobs he has had before + since then the paralegal jobs probably gave him better pay, better benefits, better hours, and being involved with legal filings let him feel smart and important.

Put another way - his baseline is so low that office work shines by comparison, the rest of us just have a different reference frame.

ETA: He has a self image as an intellectual/creative type, being a paralegal may have played into that (and if it did then working in an office came with the territory).

See, Greer could have done this and claimed deductions for his business driving for his LLC. Just put the URL and some barely clothed women on it to make it legitimate.
