The only people who need a good lawyer more than the guilty are the innocent. Also, polygraphs are complete bullshit, including the newer ones that claim to detect lies through your voice. They're just another interrogation tactic designed to make you nervous when they say things like, “Hmm, you had a reaction there." or saying you failed certain parts so they can continue press you on whatever they want.

I'm going to avoid power-leveling, but anything can trigger a reaction or a "lie" on the test.. Clenching your asshole (I'm not kidding) , stomach noises, even the test administrator's infamous gut feeling. And 99% of the time, you'll hear the same line: "The test shows you had a reaction."

In the context of a job interview, or really, any time, it's a placebo. It's like when you're a kid and a parent or teacher says, "I already know who did it; I just want you to be honest." They didn't know. But under pressure, you cracked—so now they do know , but only because you told them. Again, power leveling and whatnot, even with the new voice tests, it is a more of a pressure test than a lie detector, with the pressure coming from the mental scrutiny of the magical scientific bullshit junk you're attached to. The voice test has the added benefits for the administrator because it's new and shiny.

I'm not going to knock anyone for taking them when they have to for a job, but yeah, it's all theater.

Sounds like what I think happened to JonBenet Ramsey. I think her brother killed her accidentally and Patsy helped cover it up. It doesn't help that Patsy is dead and the police completely botched the crime scene by contaminating it.

It was a fucking dingo. Aborigines in the area told the authorities at the time that dingoes had a long history of preying on Aborigine infants. All of the "evidence" in favour of homicide was either wildly misinterpreted or flat out made up. Dingoes are highly intelligent, extremely agile predators and can climb fucking trees. They are more than capable of snatching a sleeping infant from a tent.

The father did it, the mother covered it up. JonBenet was doted on by her mother and molested by her father. The brother was being emotionally abused / neglected and was jealous of the attention that JonBenet was getting and acted out. The clue is in the ransom note. The Ramseys were weird fucks, and they took advantage of Burke's behavioural problems in order to subtly throw him under the bus.

There's nothing mysterious about the case. Azaria Chamberlain was taken by a dingo. The "blood" found in the car turned out to be from spilled milk and an industrial overspray. There was a policeman who took photos of large paw prints close to where the baby was taken and found what looked like blood stains outside the tent, but the samples he collected were never tested. The Royal Commission into the case later debunked much of the forensic evidence that was used to convict Lindy Chamberlain in 1982. It's neither the first nor the last time that country bumpkin cops have butchered a case because of their incompetence.

The only reason why Lindy Chamberlain isn't still in jail is because some Britbong tourist became convinced in 1986 that the Chamberlains had sacrificed the baby in some kind of cult ritual. He tried to climb Uluru during the night in order to find evidence, but ended up falling to his death. The police accidentally discovered the baby's buried matinee jacket near a dingo lair while they were looking for the guy's remains. They could have found it earlier if they'd done their job, instead of deciding that the absence of the jacket proved that Lindy had murdered her baby.

Yes, and one square mile in a downtown area or even along a major road is very, very different from one square mile in a stretch of woods. Even the Gilgo Beach bodies weren't found until there was an active search effort, and that wasn't really a rural area. Nature is even better at hiding things than humans are.

I used to live very rurally in the mountains, and I used to have a running joke with my closest friends that they were entitled to one body each for me to dispose of on the family farm. After which I used to often think the same thing as you when driving around, there could be bodies buried here and no-one will ever know. I mean there was just nothing for miles, and no authorities to speak of. I sometimes wonder if some hiker after a particularly bad storm will find some bones or a corpse or something.

It's an old and very famous one, but the Mary Celeste still intrigues me. A crew abandons a ship in perfectly sailable condition in a hurry and are never heard from again, the ship itself turns up ten days East of the last ships' log. It was a long time ago, but I remember reading a theory that the cargo they were hauling included some kind of alcohol or ethanol that ignited, and that whatever it was exploded but with invisible flames. Not hot enough to set fire or scorch the wood, but enough to make a very loud bang. Sailors being a superstitious bunch, probably got incredibly spooked and ran for the lifeboat and got the hell out of there. But the theories are all over the place and no-one really knows what happened to the crew or why they abandoned ship, took a lifeboat, and cut the rope.

There was a documentary that examined this theory, and while we'll never know if it's true, it covered everything found/not found on Mary Celeste very neatly. Iirc I still have that documentary on an external hard drive somewhere, I'll see if I can find it. I think it came down to chemistry, flash point, inexperience, and bad weather.

Edit: I can't find it, but research leads me to believe that the documentary was Solved: The Mystery of the Mary Celeste released in 2006 by the UK's Channel 5. If someone else can dig it up, post it here, I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Disney absolutely know what happened and have everything on tape. Jon Ronson booked a cabin on the ship in 2011, and security cameras were everywhere, including on the deck where Disney initially claimed that she went over.

The family believe that she was sexually assaulted immediately before her disappearance. When picking up Rebecca's possession, her family were handed her favorite shorts which she'd wear at all times. They had been ripped, suggesting that she'd been involved in a violent struggle.

I don't really believe the theories about foul play or trafficking that are floated by some people online, but if something involving a third party happened to her immediately before her death (other than the threesome with her girlfriend Tracie and Tracie's baby daddy causing her distress – or the sex wasn't as consensual as Tracie made it seem), it could explain why Disney refuse to release the details. Sexual assaults on cruise ships are a lot more common than most people think. It's an extremely lawless environment, especially once you get to international waters where no country has investigative responsibility.

Regardless of what happened, the Mouse's treatment of the family has been nothing short of disgusting.
