I'm wary of cops if I haven't specifically requested for them. At the end of the day, their job is to find crime and prosecute, so they will go looking wherever they can for it. Their purpose is quite clear and necessary, but they can get a bit aggressive at times, so I always assume they're sniffing for something when interacting with them, which is a rare occurrence, but they only need to decide you're guilty once to ruin you.
As always, be nice and friendly with them until it's clear they're looking for a crime and aren't just doing their basic sus test questions, at which point, shut up. They aren't supposed to be allowed to retaliate for invoking your first and fifth amendments, but at the end of the day you can beat the rap, not the ride, so do the song and dance until you're confident they're interested in more than a ticket so they don't escalate on you because they don't like your attitude. Stay square and they probably will gloss over you looking for easier, more obvious suspects.
