They may block critical shipping lanes and/or blow up oil installations in neighboring countries and send the whole world economy into turmoil. This may drag the USA into an expensive war for many years. You remember Iraq? That certainly was cheap. Oh, it cost more than a trillion dollars and caused tons of deaths?
