Mersh is an interesting addition to the mix. He's obviously a tard in his own way but in his history of working titty bars and selling coke he's probably seen more Nicks than he can count. Plus he's a perpetual bridge-burner so there's no way this relationship lasts longer than a few months.

It's weird because 5 years probation with potential jail time is both harsh for a first offender, but light for Nick, especially with how lax his probation officer is

Local law enforcement have got to be in the pockets of Ma and Pa Rekieta. When you read about that poor law abiding guy who managed an airport and collected guns who just legally sold a couple of his guns at local gun shows when the ATF came storming down to his house at the crack of dawn and shot the poor fucker dead and you compare what happened there with what happened when Rekieta's house got raided for an actual provable crime -- it's like chalk and fucking cheese.

Nobody thought this guy was supplying the cartels. They had a theory that he was selling so many of his own guns that he should have had a firearm dealer licence, but he was just a law abiding gun collector who liked guns. They didn't need to go in all gung ho to protect the evidence. They could have just made an appointment and showed up.

You couldn't sue for the body cams in that instance, because despite there being multiple forces on the raid, ATF, local police, local sheriffs, etc. nobody had their body cam turned on -- and they taped up the house's security cams as well, just to be on the safe side. Literally, seconds after they'd breached the front door (at the crack of dawn) they'd shot the guy dead.

Meanwhile, these Kandiyohi fuckers are fighting tooth and nail to protect Rekieta's privacy?

What really shocked me was when the Prosecutor tried to get any jail time removed, simply because the defendant dreamt it. Heaven forbid mommy’s special little Balldo doesn’t get everything he dreams of.

Counter point, his PO officer gave a convicted drug user and known alcoholic the greenlight to take a trip to Las Vegas, and is willfully ignoring obvious nitrous abuse on top of the mountain of death threats he's been spamming on Twitter.

If the PO was gonna do something, they'd have done it by now.

Idk about the airport guy, but the difference is that they went to the Rekieta house for drugs and with allegations of child neglect, not particularly about guns. That's a whole different tenor. And there were children there, plus they collected him away from the house and not from behind a door.

Also, MN has different standards for release of bodycam footage (though I get it that you said there was none for the gun guy) when an officer has discharged a weapon, and especially if someone was killed vs when there was none of that. Tollefson seems to think that it should be harder in all cases, which seems OTT considering that even Nick hasn't alleged anything horrific about the cops, beyond arguing about the warrant and his waffling suggestions of rubbing coke into his kid's hair (lol) and his & whoever's speculation that they lifted some of the coke. But he hasn't argued brutality or intimidation or even scaring the kids with commando-style raiding. (Yet.)

I don't think there's actual palm-greasing going on; if anything, Rekieta mère et père seem curiously disengaged. I do think they've gone out of their way to protect a citizen's privacy, but I think it's more a) that they don't want to set a precedent or get press scrutinizing every single thing, and b) not wanting to deal with Nick suing them. Which he's threatening to do anyway. But I think they've just decided to go down this path of non-release unless and until they're forced to release it; if forced, they're not on the hook for potentially having erred in a way that could be argued to have violated privacy. Remember, they're in red country (most of MN outside the Cities).

IIRC, Rekieta stated he thought he negotiated out jail time during his plea agreement, and during his sentencing hearing he was confused why he'd been given it.
He then admitted to inventing the entire concept in his head and that he forgot to fight against it.
