He was always ridiculously vague about any references to his "mate". He only ever mentioned their relationship sporadically, and when he did it was just very, very general things. We never got so much as a photo of two plates of food or a pair of hands.

So three options: 1) Aweks was showing a level of paranoia and foresight about avoiding his "mate" getting IDed and possibly harassed that he never showed about himself, 2) the "mate" didn't want any evidence at all of him being with Aweks out there, implying he was either ashamed of the relationship or had some reason to keep it on the down-low (meaning Aweks was the sidepiece hole), or 3) Aweks invented him, for once did something smart by keeping his lies very general and broad so that he couldn't get tripped up on details, but then eventually forgot he'd claimed to be in a relationship.
