I don’t think this is unthinkable. I think if you only had however many total minutes to learn about the depth of Nick’s depravity, you might pity him as if he were a normal person and think “gee maybe he doesn’t need to be embarrassed more, or his kids don’t need to deal with it”

There’s also social class. Nick was once of the court caste, and you can take a look at history and see how often it was more important to government to protect the social class it’s comprised of than to mete justice
